Tumour marker tests for breast cancer - CA15-3 and CA27-29

Hello

I am wondering if anybody could help me with my query please.

I am wondering if there are blood tests to indicate a person may have early stage breast cancer or perhaps there are blood tests used to indicate a possible recurrence?

For example, the CA-125 blood test can be a marker for ovarian cancer but I wonder is there were any blood tests used to indicate the possibility of breast cancer?  Perhaps CA15-3 or CA27-29 are used?  Or even a different blood test?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

  • I have not seen it done in the UK, but that is not to say it isn't, just that it was never mentioned as part of the monitoring protocols around where I am. It's worth asking about in the hospital where you are being treated at, because not all NHS trusts operate the same way.

(By the way, as a personal opinion, while I can see the value of these tests in some situations, I prefer definite answers, which is why I like biopsies and pathology reports best.)

  • I had bloods done 2 months before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, all fine apart from my gfr for kidneys was abnormal , was abnormal on a few times years prior to this. Went back to normal  pre op & after op.

The oncotype DX test showed i had a medium recurrence.

BRAC gene can show if you have a altered gene for breast cancer.

Other then I don't know of anything else.

  • Thank you  and for your replies.

I agree definite answers via the tests you suggest are far better but I did wonder if blood tests might also be used in addition perhaps to spot something before it became visible via a scan.

However, from what you have both said it would appear blood tests are not used for breast cancer in the same way as the CA125 blood test is used to identify possible ovarian cancer.

Thank you both again for taking the time to reply.
