I start my first chemo on the 15th March and want to be ready before hand with the head wear and also did anyone shave hair off before treatment or just let it fall out

Can anyone give me some advice on which head wear to go for , I've looked at Anna bandana website but they is so much choice

how many will I need and which ones are best for sleeping in , going outside in ,scarves or beanies

I need something that will stay in place and not slip around any suggestions greatly received

  • I ct my hair off ahead of chemo and donated it then shaved the rest off. Felt very empowering and it meant I was completely used t the short hair look by the time my hair fell out, pls I didn't really notice it coming out. I wouldn't definitely recommend that to take back some control. I ended up feeling like the hair loss was the easiest of the chemo side effects - I knew it was going to happen and it wasn't painful or made me feel ill.

I got a mixture of beanies, scarves, winter hats and pre-tied scarves (the last ne from chemo headwear). I wore the beanies inside the house - or nothing at all - and the scarves for medical appointments and winter hats for going on walks etc.

You don't need to get chemo ones, just get something nice and soft for your head.

You can get sleeping nightcaps which are quite nice though I ended up with intense night sweats from my medical menopause so ended up continually putting them on and off as when I wasn't having a hot flash, I was really chilled!

  • Thank you Beatthebreast

Thats really helpful I'll have another look at the sites

  • Hi Stubborn

Like Beatthebreast, i shaved. I had longish hair all my life, so did it in stages when I knew chemo was on the cards and my onc had told me that hair would definitely go on EC &Docetaxol. We were in darkest Covid times, so all the hairdressers were closed. Daughter-in-law cut me into a sharp bob, then a week later into a boy style. Once treatment started and it was shedding, I got my brother to do a number three cut with a beard trimmer. I found anything touching the hairs made the follicles quite painful (from the end of first cycle EC). I got brother to do me a wet shave and found that my head was much more comfortable.

Re: hats. I already had a selection of scarves, as a woman of a certain age. There are tutorials online eg on Utube with ideas for tying them. I also got quite a few beanies and tube hats made of cotton T shirt type material from ebay and also some stretchy velvety ones. The cotton ones turned out to be my favourites. In fact even although I now have a complete coverage of very curly hair about a couple of inches long, I still wear these for comfort when going out as they are not too hot.

I also got a selection of large cheap dangly earrings (mostly coloured plastic) online. I wore them everyday, as I liked to have something at the side of my face. Before BC I would never have worn big dangles!

Take one day at a time and make the most of your good days.

    All the best

  • Personally I’ve lived in beanies, I got a wig but I’ve never worn it. I wore a beanie in bed too x

  • Hi WallyDug

Thank you for your reply ,I've booked in at the hairdressers to have a shorter cut before treatment and go from there

Being on the farm I tend to wear hats quite often so maybe I could just put them on over a cotton beanie when i'm able to do some jobs outside

(hopefully! don't do being indoors at the best of times, though I know on some days I'll have to )
