Hi
can anyone advise how quickly (if at all) their periods stopped after chemo started. I was diagnosed at the beginning of December with strongly hormone dependent bc. I am yet to start chemo as have had two surgeries so far. By the time I finally start hormone therapy it will have been approximately 9 months from diagnoses (after chemo is finished). I know the medical professionals know what they are doing but I am really scared of the hormones flying around before then, especially as I am on a three week menstrual cycle for some reason.
Thanks
I have had 2 cycles of EC chemo so far and had a period after my first infusion. I’m almost 54years old and still have regular periods and as my cancer is also hormone receptive I have the same concerns as you regarding having way too many hormones hanging around . Although as I understand even if periods stop doesn’t always mean you are in menopause. I think a blood test is needed to determine this , although I am not 100% sure as I am not medically trained so hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge will be along to advice better .
They offered me a choice of tamoxifen or zoladex to put me into a medical menopause and then exemestane on top. I chose the menopause route as it gave better chances of it not returning for my circumstances (mid-40s, pre-menopausal).
I had chemo prior to surgery and they started my zoladex at the same time as my 2nd chemo cycle as they wanted to make sure I was post-menopausal by the time I started exemestane.
So for me, I started hormone therapy shortly after starting treatment. Can't say the sudden menopause was fun but as it was wrapped up alongside chemo, then I was feeling awful anyway, so got the worst of it all done in one go!
I started exemestane a couple of months after surgery.
Thank you- I am going to ask for this also. I certainly don’t want to go through menopause twice either. X
