Hi - I am another newly diagnosed person who didn’t really want to join this club. I’ve read some of the messages and although I don’t usually join forums it seems friendly and helpful.
I am lucky to have lots of good friends and family but don’t want BC to be the topic of every conversation with them. That said I feel the need to talk about it as there are so many unanswered questions.
So what I think I understand so far is, I have invasive ductal cancer. Grade 2. Ultrasound hasn’t picked up anything in lymph nodes so they think I am Grade 1 all of which is good I think?
on 15th Match (which seems ages away) I a
having a lumpectomy and some lymph nodes taken to check them likely 3 weeks they said. My concerns are:
I had a 12mm ‘mass’ identified about four years ago in the same place. I had a biopsy and it was fine - told it would disperse on its own. It didn’t. When I had this mammogram/ultrasound done it was still there.
When I met the Consultant it wasn’t referenced And all conversation was about the lumpectomy and nodes. I forgot to ask if I should be worried about the mass and if it should be removed.
I’ve since spoken with a breast care nurse who basically said we can ask them to take it out if you want but that isn’t the question really, as I don’t know snd don’t know how to find out.
has anyone else had a similar experience. Sorry for the long first post x
Hi GotThis,
im so very sorry that you find yourself part of this club. It does sound like you’ve caught it early, which is very good. Don’t mix up the grade with the stage. “grade” refers to how aggressive the cancer cells inside your tumour are, whereas “stage” refers to how much it has spread at the time of diagnosis. So if they find no evidence in the lymph nodes and the lump is pretty small you’ll be grade 2, stage 1.
As far as the old lump goes I haven’t had that experience. But personally I’d be concerned, and at least want further biopsies of the old lump. I was offered a lumpectomy but chose a mastectomy, and they found two additional small areas elsewhere in the breast the removed that hadn’t shown up on the mammogram, so I guess I probably am swayed by that though. If the nurse isn’t helpful I’d see if you can have a conversation with the surgeon again to discuss risk around the old lump vs bigger surgery.
I hope things go well for you, it does feel like information overload at the start, so don’t be afraid to keep asking questions.
Thank you so much for answering me Rungirlrun it has really helped and given me the confidence to keep asking questions. I know how busy they all are and feel a bit of a bother. But I will try. Thank you x
