I had surgery 3 weeks ago to remove the cancerous lump I had found in December, and some lymph nodes that were suspicious on an ultrasound and PET scan. This is the second time I've had breast cancer (first time in 2012) and this is being considered a local recurrence and the surgery was to do a further axillary clearance to what was done the first time (I also had a double mastectomy last time). The surgeon was pleased with how the surgery went, and felt confident she had got all she went in for. However, the histology report showed only cancer in the lump, and not in any of the lymph nodes removed, which doesn't match the scans, as there was at least one thing showing up as dodgy further up in my arm pit. I am due to start chemo soon (was already the plan) but now I will also need another ultrasound in 2-3 weeks and another PET scan in around 3 months, to see whether the thing further up had, indeed, been missed. It feels really stressful when I had thought the pre-chemo surgery had removed it all, and now there is a question mark around this.
Hello PG
I am so sorry to hear that you are having all of this extra stress. Just what you do not need. The good thing is that they have chemo already scheduled for you and that they are doing follow up imaging to check things out. Other things like an infection rather than BC can also make lymph nodes swell up. I know that it is the hardest thing, but try not to have your brain doing overtime and thinking the worst. Here's hoping that it is something innocent that was making your node look dodgy.
Did you have chemo back in 2012? and do they know what receptor types you have? Another good thing, is that there are now so many more drugs available to tackle any stray cells or bits and bobs. I had a might great lump over 5cm and two positive nodes, so not just stray cells . My chemo was before surgery and completely cleared it thanks to the targeted meds. There is so much positive that can be done now.
Don't despair and let us know how you get on.
Sending big virtual hugs
Wishing you all the best

Yes I had chemo back in 2012 (6 cycles - FEC-T) but I didn't have radiotherapy last time. I'll be having both chemo and radio this time.
That is very reassuring to hear that the chemo cleared your lump, and also useful to know that an infection can also make lymph nodes swell.
I am mostly managing to stay calm and balanced (doing lots of art is helping, as is hypnotherapy) but it just seems so unfair to have this again after over 9 years clear, and to still have new questions about the diagnosis coming up 10 weeks later is quite disconcerting!!
The tumour is triple negative, as it was jn 2012, so not receptive to hormones or to herceptin.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I hope you are doing ok x
