First chemo on Thursday and I’m undecided about trying cold cap! Anyone found it worthwhile or otherwise?

I have many wigs stocked up, so am as ready as I can be for hair loss. I’m quite happy with the first three treatments (EC), but I’ve heard that my final three docetaxil has a risk of causing permanent hair loss (albeit quite a small risk). So thought I may try cold cap to minimise damage to my follicles. Anybody had good results. And, has anyone had their hair come back without any issues after docetaxil? Thanks!

  • Hi. I have had 3 x Ec and one docetaxil (2 to go). I have used cold cap. I had at least 50 percent of my hair just a bald around the parting area around the top.

I've not found it not too bad although my scalp is getting more sensitive now.

    Its definitely worth trying

    Good luck xx

  • Thanks for that, may give it a go! Does it add a lot of time onto your treatment xx

  • Lost my hair with EC, started to grow back while I was on the docetaxel albeit incredibly slowly, I was fuzzy as my daughter said, finished docetaxel 9th November, have full head coverage about 1cm ish long, my lashes, brows and all other body hair also making a comeback! Xx

  • That’s good news! Well done on completing your treatment! Can’t wait to be at the stage you’re at! Wishing you long luscious locks! Slight smile

  • Thanks! Yup that’s me and chemo done Pray had my mastectomy with diep 3 weeks ago and now just the phesgo injections to continue with until about October, my oncologist has mentioned a couple of other tablets that he MAY prescribe but I’m not even thinking about that, have learned to cross my own bridges when I come to them. It seemed like such a long haul ahead of me at the start but equally it’s gone relatively fast, once you get going it can get a strange momentum about it x

  • Absolutely, I’m trying to stay positive, one day at time! I’m planning for chemo, but not worrying about it, it is what it is. Enjoying all the good days and I’ll deal with any less good days as they come along. Best of luck with the rest of your care and I hope that too passes quickly for you. Thanks for you encouragement! x

  • It's half an hour before and an hour after for EC

  • Definitely, as I said in your other thread, chemo was a mixed bag but it had good days and bad days throughout and taking each day as it comes is a helpful attitude. I found that sometimes I had very random side effects that were different with each cycle. One thing I would just say is take all the anti sickness meds, they will give you some ‘in case’ you feel ill, just take them, try and get some omeprazole and take one a day but if you get bad acid take two, one with breakfast one with lunch. I found the steroids did keep me awake, I’m single so I didn’t have anyone to worry about waking up other than the dog and my 12 year old but I took a flask of hot water to bed with me and some lemon and ginger tea bags for when I woke up in the small hours. Also have a jar of ginger biscuits in my bedroom because I found if I ate something little and often I felt less nauseous. Ritz crackers worked for that it the day for me too. Good luck! It’s a surreal experience in many ways but we get through it x

  • I’m using it.  I’ve done 3 EC and 9 Paclitaxel so far, 3 more to go.  I’ve still got a full head of hair, but a bit thin on top and a tiny bit receded at the forehead.  Have been shedding throughout, but particularly weeks 3 to 6 ish on each treatment, then it seems to settle back down so I’m hoping I’ll keep what I have left to the end.  I’m confident that with a good cut and a month or so regrowth to fill in the thin bits no-one will really notice or stare, which was my aim.

time wise, half an or before and an hour after for both EC and Pac.  Some of that time you’d be there anyway, the pre-meds need time to work and there’s a 15 min or so flush for the iv after treatment.  I’ve not found it a problem to use, it’s uncomfortable for the first 15 mins but I don’t notice it after that other than the cold.  I just recline the chair and cuddle up under a blanket with a heat pad they give me, and just get lost in a book for a couple of hours.
