Hi I am a bit confused
Following a mammogram I had biopsy I had the results 3 weeks later where I have been told I have precancerous cells. I am now booked in for a lump removal and they will remove a margin around the lump.
I cant work out what is the difference between a lump removal biopsy and a lumpecomy?
I am taking HRT estrogen only. I asked if I should stop taking it and was told not yet to continue with my normal medication. But my GP and pre-op they questioned why I was still taking it. Which has really worried me.
Once the lumps removed it will be tested and they will then confirm if its cancer and if I need more treatment I just feel very confused. I go from convincing myself I have cancer to then thinking I will be fine.
Any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks Debbie
Sorry you’re having this horrible experience. On a biopsy they tend to remove just a bit of the lump for testing, I personally have not heard of a ‘lump removal biopsy’ but that may just be down to what I’ve experienced and it may be exactly the same as a lumpectomy just a different term. A lumpectomy is when they take the whole lump out and some additional tissue surrounding it. Did the mention DCIS? This is a considered pre cancerous or stage zero cancer and is graded in its development from low to high grade. It sounds to me this is what they think you may have but it maybe they don’t know at this stage? It’s is a horribly confusing stage of the treatment, right at the beginning where nothing is certain. Regards the hrt, stopping it depends on if it is DCIS or invasive cancer I believe. I’m not medical so I can’t give an opinion on if that’s the wrong or right thing to do but I would certainly question it again, have you been given details of a breast care nursing team? X
I was diagnosed with DCIS high grade after biopsy. They removed the offending area (11mm) via lumpectomy and obtained clear margins. The surgery biopsy was more thorough and tested for hormone sensitive, I wasn't asked at original diagnosis if I was on HRT - I wasn't anyway and my biopsy was negative for hormone sensitive.
Ah ok, so I think they call that a lumpectomy or a WLE more commonly, which is the operation I had too back in 2013. After that as Grogg says they’ll test what they remove and then come back to you with what further treatment you may need. It’s a shame they couldn’t tell you a bit more after your biopsy. All the best of luck with the removal on Thursday, hopefully you’ll get some good news xx
