I'm going in for my operation in 3 days time 7am Thursday I have to be there.
Dreading it ... obviously.
I'm 56 have grade 3, e+ her2+ cancer in my left breast.
Part of me thinks I'm wasting my time having the op for all the good its going to do ...but I am.
Lump removal and some nodes.
Anyway ... any tips? Recovery time??? Pain relief??? Will I get a home nurse visit afterwards???
I bought ( at such expense) 2 sports type zip front bras from m and s. And 3 big tops that zip up the front until I can move again.
Will I be able to pull leggings up ?? Any recommendations on what to wear to hospital and afterwards greatly appreciated.
In hospital I'll be given a gown to wear? Can you keep socks on? Knickers on??? After all it's faulty boob they're after ... nothing below waist should interest them???
No make up at all??? I understand they need to see skin colour / lip colour...mascara? Waterproof?? Why am i even asking such a trivial question?!
Will I be able to walk out of hospital? Or need a wheelchair?
When will I feel OK to walk around at home as normal. Will have someone with me for 2 days then I'm on my own.
Thanks for any tips/ advice.
Good luck to everyone. X
Hello. Perfectly understandable to have questions. The hospital should give you a list of what to take but here's my short fire responses. Yes gown given. Cotton knickers left on, fetching hospital stocking, extra gown as dressing gown as it was June and wore my slippers as I had to walk to theatre. I had front fastening bra which they made me put on after surgery. Was just achy and tired but could dress myself afterwards. My sister came to collect me and did wheelchair me to exit as it was a long way. I was given drugs to take home. Dissolvable stitches and had no follow up but suspect you can ring breast nurse if you have questions. Every hospital is different. I wore light make up as I dont like not to have anything on. I took a small toiletry bag with deodorant, toothbrush and paste and hairbrush just in case they kept you in. Fed me juice and sandwich. Had to get up and walk to pee before they would let me home. A long day there for 7am. Home about 8pm. Do exercises from day 2. Good luck x
I had same op 20th Jan. No make up, own knickers kept on, green socks to wear for 3 days. Staff were amazing. Op around 2pm, home around 8pm. Walked out of hospital, sore, achy, took paracetamol. Day 2 exercises uncomfortable but persevered. Getting there now. You can do this, breathe deep, sleep, let them do op.
Hi, I had a similar diagnosis to you I think, though I had chemo before surgery. It's important to do the exercises and it was difficult to dress for a few days as I had to limit the use of my arm, so leggings pulled up with one hand. Getting the surgery socks on one handed is quite a feat, in fact perhaps the most difficult thing to do thinking back.
My blog post might help. Or at least make you smile. Surgery blog
Good luck
Hi
its as Tired Minion says
leave your jewellery at home.
I didn’t need pain relief but felt a bit groggy from the anaesthetic for a couple of days….was back dog walking a couple of days later .I slept in a in a soft bra as it stopped my boobs pulling on the scar.
Take a book or something to occupy yourself as you don’t know where you are on the list.
I was lucky and in theatre at 9am but the lady who arrived with me at 7 didn’t go in until 2pm
Good luck x
Good luck with your op on Thursday.
I had hospital knickers wasn’t allowed to wear my own.
Take a dressing gown to go over the gown and a pair of slippers, I also had button front pyjamas just in case I had to stay in and a wash bag and I took some biscuits for after the op, although they do give you food. Wore no makeup, no jewellery and no nail varnish.
I was home the same day, I walked out of the hospital, no dressings as the surgeon used glue, was wiped out the day after and up for a little longer 2 days after op. Was very sore for about 2 weeks but could do pretty much everything in that time, I think it was a little more difficult as it was my right side and I’m right handed, but I was driving again at 3 weeks. Oh and I just took paracetamol for any pain.
Hi I had a theraputic mammoplasty with reduction on other side, yh gown given, cotton knickers left on. I had no drains. Wore hospital stocking after. I had a front fastening bra which I put on after surgery. I did ache and was tired for a few days, but took no pain relief it was manageable. I was in overnight, I didn't go down to late afternoon and surgery was about 5 hrs or just under. Have they advised the rest of your treatment plan, best wishes xxx
Hi I jad the same op in Feb last year I got my bras from asda such a good price post surgery ones they were amazing I wasn't in any pain whatsoever a bit sore but that's it I walked out of hospital fine take a dressing gown they give you lovely coloured surgical stockingnit mine were green lol after which you need to leave on for a week I did start my exercises from day 2 a must as they stop cording I was given pain killers but didn't really need them a nurse came out to me to check wound and take the stitches out heal up very nicely good luck they will give you some food and drink make sure you have a wee then once all is well home you go xxxx
Thanks to everyone for replying.
Very helpful indeed.
Had the op yesterday.
Dressing gown v important to save my dignity!
Nurses at hartlepool quite brilliant at their jobs
I was there all day ...far longer than anyone due to reaction to morphine.
I had my op first of the day. Had to be there by 7.15. Shown into a large cubicle with a chair. Changed into gown, and socks (need to wear for 2 weeks). Asked a dozen or more questions from what seemed like a dozen or more people.
Doctor came with 2 others discussed me feeling refluxy (not a proplem), drew couple of arrows on for lymphs.
Then had an injection of something radioactive which would track where lymph nodes are ... which hurt like a 1000 bees stinging me all at once for 10 seconds straight.
After op the wounds felt fine really and my movement is astonishingly good. But oh my the morphine. I've never felt so ill ..... like I've been trapped on a super fast fairground ride for hours unable to get off. My head just spinning, that awful constant feeling of sickness. I was there for about 10 hours.
Since arriving home I've sipped water to try and get the horrible stuff out of my system. Woke up a lot during night but feel a lot better.
Thanks again. Good luck to everyone. X
