I'm 4 weeks after finishing radiotherapy and underneath my left boob the skin has split and there are areas that can be seen where the skin is rubbing away. I have been back to oncology and they have me some dressings to put on it which I have been doing.
I use E45 and Aloe Vera to moisturise with but at present cannot use this under my boob as it stings so much. I know this is part and parcel of radiotherapy but getting fed up with not wearing a bra and as a large breasted woman this can be uncomfortable.
I'm normally a positive looking forward woman but I'm now at the stage of when will I feel okay and stop feeling like why me. Never had these feelings all the way through the treatment. I have a very supportive family and friends but don't feel I can talk about how I'm now feeling to them. I really want to know if this is normal and it's just another process I have to go through and once the awful sunburn under the boob has gone I will again start to feel better.
Sorry I've had this grumble but feel that people on here will understand as they have /are going through it as well.
Hi
so sorry you are suffering. I also suffered really badly with broken skin with very bad blisters under my boob. My radiotherapy clinic gave me a roll of absorbent dressing which was brilliant. I cut it to 20 cm x 20 cm and folded it in half so the backing was together with the absorbent side on the skin under my boob. I then got the doctor to write a prescription for another few boxes of 2 rolls. It helped me tremendously.
Polymem non-adhesive dressing rolls. Item number 5824.
it is expensive to buy online so get it on prescription. I used a this daily for about 2 weeks as it absorbs any weeping from the blisters and most importantly stops the skin to skin contact. I just wedged it under my breast which held it in place (no tape or anything).
I was prescribed creams too, but found it too painful to put on so stuck to the polymem dressing and going braless. I am also large breasted so was uncomfortable.
I got through 7 rounds of chemo, and a lumpectomy but the radiotherapy part was awful and brought me to rock bottom. I slept wedged up on the settee for weeks as it was too painful to lie in bed. It is funny as a lot of people sail through radiotherapy!
hope this helps.
I had this as a 36G cup. I didn't get on with dressing they gave me but a sanitary towel when really bad then panty liner did the trick. I kept in place with stretch step into bras at night and under post surgery bra during the day. I also had cream off BCN to stop any infection. Told not to put moisturiser there but to let it dry out. It recovered quite well and quickly once radiotherapy finished - I had 15 sessions.
Thanks it is polymem that I was given but nearly used it up, now at GP will ask if he can prescribe some.
Yes have the blisters as well.
This has helped a lot as sometimes feel I'm making something out of nothing.
Hi Grogg thanks. I had 5 rounds but have told that it's the same amount of radiotherapy as if I had 15. I'm a 44 DD and if I go out I put on an after surgery bra then take it off when I get home.
If unable to get anymore dressings then will try your suggestions thanks for that.
Only wear a bra when out. If no one sure round I will lay on the sofa holding boob up so the air can get round it and help dry it lol.
I'm back in post op bra's that do up at the front as they are very soft.
Will need to get some new bra's soon as all my old ones are under wire and don't think I can wear those at the moment.
Hi doctor has ordered some for me. He said he wasn't sure if he could but don't think he can give a dam as he is retiring soon. Old fashioned GP will miss him.
So glad the doctor is ordering some for you.
my doctors nurse gave me another type of dressing to use while the polymem was on order at the chemist, and when I removed the other dressing it pulled my skin off and made me bleed.
it was dreadful and I can honestly say it was the worst few weeks of my life and you are definitely not making something out of nothing. Like me you have gotten through some awful times only to be floored by something that others get through more easily. I understood it is more common in larger ladies and coloured skin, according to my radiologist. I am a 38ff and like you when I could I had to lie on the bed or settee holding my breast up in the air to get it at it to help the drying out process.
You keep strong and hopefully it will ease in the next week or so x
I got so addicted to my post surgery bras as so soft, no wires etc. wore for months . You can take wires out of old bras too but I found they were useless, ok for sleeping in to keep pad in place. I do remember one night after I had finished radiotherapy the stinging pain stopped me from sleeping and weekend so no BCN for advice. I put sudacrem on it and worked a treat but only did one night
