Affect of chemo on bone density

Having been diagnosed with er+ breast cancer, I have had a lumpectomy in Dec including full axillary clearance.  Having received clear margins and 1 out of 18 positive lymph nodes I have been told that I need chemo and do not qualify for oncotest due to 1 lymph node involvement.

Obviously I am disappointed as hoped to avoid chemo mainly because I already have osteoporosis and I am now worrying that the chemo will cause further bone loss.

Just wondered if anyone has any info or experience regarding side effects of chemo snd whether this will cause further none loss?  Also not sure whether I should push oncotest - I'm 56.

Many thank for any information

  • Hi it’s a bit of a lottery about Oncotype testing. I got it as my trust have decided to fund it for under 3 nodes, I had 2.
As it is I’m having RT and have started letrozole and have a dexa scan booked. I don’t know if chemo can affect your bone density, but it would be best to speak with your oncologist.

Thanks Angus - I have private health through work and they do fund the test but by consultant said belt and braces - also he said if there are nodes involved insufficient data regarding no chemo -  different apparently if negative nodes as chemo little benefit.

I bet if you asked 10 oncologists they would all have a different view!!

My only worry is bone loss with chemo- i will speak again with my consultant as seeing him on Friday.

    Thanks for the feedback !

  • Hi  I was diagnose in 2019 had MX then chemo followed by Herceptin ( HER POSITIVE ) . Then like a few people in the community I’m still receiving bisphosonate infusion for bone strengthening . This was to help prevent recurrence of BC . We’re all different with different treatment plans but you may get given something like this to help your bone density .

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • Hi, I am not sure if chemo impacts bones, but if you go onto oestrogen reducing meds (eg Letrozole) then these do, hence the need for bone infusions and calcium supplements. It seems that everything fixes something that has a knock on to something else. I'd recommend trying to ask your oncologist about the whole treatment plan and your concerns about osteoporosis and see what they recommend.  Best of luck
