my mum has early stages of triple negative breast cancer. She’s been having chemotherapy since July 2021, and has had her lumpectomy in October 2021. She has always said how since starting chemo her taste has complete changed, nothing tastes nice or she can’t taste things. She does say she can just taste sweetness but it’s not a nice taste, only towards just before her next chemo session she had a little bit more taste sense but it’s not complete the same. (It’s not covid as she’s regularly tested for covid and this has been an ongoing issue since starting chemo). I did speak to oncologist but the oncologist said there’s nothing she can do about it unfortunately. Just wondering if anyone else experienced this and if they have any advice or tips on how they improved their sense of taste perhaps ?
Hi
I was the same with my taste whilst on chemo. Only sweet things near enough tasted the same such as fruit, sweet and sour etc. Even plain chicken had an 'off' taste. I completely went off coffee whereas I was a big coffee drinker before. Unfortunately, I didn't really find a way of improving other tastes other than eating sweeter kind of tastes or putting up with it. I did enjoy pineapple if that helps. Once I had finished chemo my, taste began to return to 'normal ' over a few weeks, I still don't enjoy coffee as much as I used to!
Take care
Claire x
Fifitrix thanks so much for sharing your experience, I didn’t know if it was something a lot of people had. My mum has another 6 months of oral chemotherapy now which she will be starting tomorrow hopefully, I’m not sure what I can do to help her appetite but I will try pineapple and see if she likes the taste of that, there’s not much she likes to taste of now
I don't think there is a way of improving taste while on chemo, but she will regain it once chemo ends. I had no appetite on EC but taste was awful on docetaxel, and a continual terrible taste in my mouth. I did find sweet things helped (I don't have a sweet tooth at all), so would drink ribena or lemon juice rather than water, and the odd gummy sweet helped.
Mine eventually improved 4 or 5 weeks after last chemo cycle.
Hi
As others have commented, I think the awful taste in the mouth is inevitable when on chemo. I found drinking tea difficult so stuck to coffee.
i also found pineapple juice drinkable but didn't like orange juice. I think it is a matter of trial and error by trying out different things, I had toast and baked potatoes but found my earlier enjoyment of sweet biscuits lessened and hasn't returned since completing chemo, although I have enjoyed home baked mince pies and Xmas cake over the holiday period.
Hi Sara9, the taste thing is horrible but it can’t be improved, it’s a question of finding things you can tolerate the taste and texture of, I found fruity, sharp, flavours were ok, fruity ice lollies, sorbets, porridge wasn’t bad, yogurts, chicken soup. I hated chocolate which I normally love but I think what tastes you tolerate differ from person to person x
