New to group and waiting for chemo!

Hello everyone, I am struggling to sleep and have an over active brain! So I thought I'd say hello!

I was diagnosed with BC on the 28/9/21 after finding an indentation, after all the scans/tests a shadow was found and I had my lumpectomy and a full lymph node clearance on the 10/11/21. I had 6 out of 14 nodes that were positive. I'm healing well but do have a seroma which isn't causing me too much pain at the moment. My CT scan and bone scan were luckily both clear but during the wait for those results I dipped to the lowest I've ever been.

The wait for chemo is filling me with dread, reading about all the side effects and over analysing everything (stupid active brain) is causing insomnia. My cancer is a grade 3 ER+ and I've been told I'll be having 3 cycles of EC and then 3 cycles of Docetaxel. I'm allergic to anti sickness meds (anaphylaxis reaction realised after an operation a few years back) so I'm actually very worried. I'm having 4 weeks of Radio after chemo then 10 years of tamoxifen and possibly ovary implants if I'm not plummeted into the menopause! It feels like such a long road of uncertainty.

Is anyone else waiting for chemo and in a pickle like me?  My knickers are truly in a twist! Has anyone got any tips to stay calm?

Sorry to ramble on. XXX

  • Thanks for your reply Hugging.

  • Oh you have been through it- that feeling of the reality of the situation kicking in when they say they found something and want to do biospy I don’t think will ever leave me! I was convinced they had it wrong until that point. Hopefully you can now have time to recover from the operation and hope you get the results soon and they are all good Two hearts

  • Hi Brainybunch!

Oh dear Lord - that's all I can say! From what you've described, I can completely understand what you're saying - I've been having similar ongoing issues since being diagnosed in July!!

With regards to Bone Scan - I also had a bone scan, as 'something' was picked up on CT Scan! In my case it was from a previous back problem too - and they say they are 'confident' it's not anything cancer related!

I had lumpectomy and SN's removed in Aug and another op in Sep to clear margins and axillary node clearance. I have also had problems with underarm pain and movement, infection and seroma. (despite religiously doing arm exercises). The swelling is reduced now, certainly less painful and movement is slowly improving too! I have been having physio every 3 weeks which is helping! My point being, we all obviously respond differently! I've been told that the nerve damage caused during op, may or may not ever be rectified! The scar under my arm is still very red, and they're saying the remaining lump is now a 'neuroma' rather than a 'seroma'!! I still have shooting pains, numbness, tingling and general pain in neck, arm and shoulder! But, on the positive side, it's definitely not as severe as it was!

My advice would be to seek further assistance ie Physio ASAP! I'm struggling with Chemo as it is, and the added problems with my arm isn't helping matters! Lol.

Just one other thing to make you aware of - any previous trauma to your body ie back issues, will be intensified with Chemo and injections during chemo! My back has been relatively ok for the last 3 years, but is now very painful on a continual basis! I'm just praying this stops when Chemo stops!

Sorry this isn't a very cheery post! Lol x x

  • Thank you for this frank and honest discussion.  I've had frozen shoulders (left about 13 years ago, then right kicked in about 10 years ago in sympathy) and I've not had full range of motion with either of them since.  Surgery seems to have tightened everything up again, though I'm using the physio exercises recommended as a way to hopefully regain movement and flexibility on both sides.  Good to know too about the back issues, so I won't think something is drastically wrong if there is sudden severe changes or intensity in aches through my lumbar region when the chemo starts.

I think we're all going through similar journeys, just taking different routes.  We'll all come through this I know, but it's scary when you've seen both your Mum and Mother-in law go through this, albeit 20 years ago and I know science has moved in leaps and bounds for the better.  Fingers crossed that we all get through this to be support for others about to start their treatments and are the 'newbies' on the forum.

Thank you for your kind words. Hugging

  • Keep us posted with your results and treatment! Really hope things progress a little smoothly for you!

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum and Mother in Law - it's only when it's people really close to us, going through this, that we realise how tough it can be!

I've got my 4th Chemo tomorrow and have to admit that I'm not particularly looking forward to it! It's been a very long 6 months so far since diagnosis! Counting down the weeks!

    Take care x x

  • Hi Hev999, I still haven't got a chemo start date. I have an appointment which came through today for the 25th of January which has worried me. It will be nearly 11 weeks since my op on the 25th and I am not on any meds/oestrogen suppressants. I've spoken to my nurse and she said Christmas has delayed things and now staff shortages due to Covid. It's really knocked me today but she did try and reassure me.

I've been very open about my diagnosis to friends and family, I have an amazing network...luckily like you.

Anti sickness meds: I think they will try and find something that doesn't have the ingredient I am allergic to and it will be trial and error to see what works I think. Fingers crossed.

I haven't noticed any armpit troubles for the last week or so which to me is a massive win win. No zinger pains, no soreness and pulling sensation. Time definately is a great healer.  The exercises are a bind but they do help recovery. No swelling either now even though I had a small seroma. My naughty boob has hardened at the bottom and I can't sleep without my bra as yet. I'm a 38GG so the pulling causes pain. I'm just keeping an eye on it incase it goes red then I'll need to get it checked.

Good luck tomorrow. At least you know what you're doing and know the tiddly pants feeling!! Also I'm going to copy you and request my pathology report. I didn't even think of that! Great place to pick up things on here so thank you. Xxx
