Tumour growth?

Hello, I’m new to this whole community chat thing, but I’ve been recommended to come on here and speak with other people in a similar situation to mine.

I’m 30 years old and I was recently diagnosed with Grade 3 Triple negative Multifocal (multiple tumours) invasive ductal carcinoma. I am currently undergoing chemotherapy, had my first cycle 12 days ago. It made me very ill the first week, but have been feeling better the last few days, however I am absolutely terrified that my tumour is growing. At diagnosis I was told I had 3 tumours, one 5cm, one 3cm and one 2cm. I also have lymphedema so my breast tissue has been very hard for a while, however I feel like since my first cycle of chemotherapy the tumour is growing, I can’t be sure of this because of the lymphedema, I’m not sure what is tumour and what is lymphedema but my boob feels hard all over, particularly where the 5cm tumour sits, it feels like the whole underneath of my boob is rock hard. It’s also really sore and heavy.
Basically I’m wondering if anyone else had really sore hard boobs during chemo, I obviously can’t be sure if it has grown, but is it normal for it to be so sore and heavy and hard, I’m worried chemo is not working, or am I being too pessimistic as I am only 12 days in?

Hi there. I just wanted to reply to you although my experience was different. I had lumpectomy first. I think it is completely normal to "feel" all sorts of things as you are suddenly very aware of it. I would say 12 days in is very early days. Chemo works. It is awful but it does what it must do. If I were you, i would definitely speak to the breast care nurses about your fears so that you can let it go. Trust the process and give it time.

The lymphoedema will definitely also play a role here and it could well be why your boob feels different. I think that we all react so differently to chemo that it is hard to say what is normal or not but I reckon it is highly unlikely that your tumour has grown that much in such a short amount of time.

If you find you can't shake the fear, talk to your oncologist about a scan to see how it has progressed.

I was extremely nauseous with vomiting on each of my first 3 FEC cycles but hang in there. It is all worth it!

Before you know it, you will be through it

  • Some of your experience mirrors mine. I too am triple negative, and I too thought my tumour was growing at some point while on chemo, and experienced pain in it. When they finally took it all out, it turned out the tumour was about the same size it had been right from the start. There was also a scan-related scare when it was measured wrong and gave the impression that it had grown 9mm in 9 weeks, but that was shown to be false when they had the tumour itself to mearue right in front of their eyes.

12 days in is very early, yes, but the way you are feeling is completely understandable. Next time you see your oncologist perhaps you could ask when your next scan is, and what the margin of error is on that particular scan. You could also ask to see images of your scans side by side so you can see a little for yourself.
