Having to sit down all the time after chemo - no strength

Hi everyone, happy new year.

I had my fifth cycle of chemo 8 days ago (2nd of docetaxel) and for the past few days I’ve been feeling like I can’t stand up for long periods of time but have to not only sit, but lie down. Then I recoup energy after a while and can stand up a bit again.

This morning I only made a quick trip to the loo and starting to make breakfast in the kitchen before I felt I was absolutely dropping. Has anyone else had this side effect? Anything that helps?

I also have weird feelings in my chest which sounds worrying, but I had this last cycle too and they thoroughly checked me but found nothing wrong there.

  • Exactly what weird feeling in your chest, can you describe more specifically?

As for the total wipe out, yeah, I have experienced that too. Last time this happened I was also drinking so much water that I thought I could compete with a camel, and still, I needed about two litres of fluid intravenously. Another time one litre was enough. On other days it's just staying in bed and as you said, only getting up for the loo.

Yes, I felt like this, especially after the Docetaxel rounds. I bought myself a high seat for the kitchen so I could use less energy while I was making any food - but even then I didn’t manage much.

Be kind to yourself - it is normal, and because you’re in round five it’s cumulative. I also had weird things in my chest and lots of random aches and pains. Rest and much as you can.

Hi, I’m  feeling exactly the same, I finished treatment Xmas Eve and energy levels are zero!

Slow and steady wins the race though xx

  • I had my last treatment on the 16th Dec and still feel exhausted, walking slowly and with a tight chest. I also drank lots and was still dehydrated. Ok if I sit down but need to get back to sorting out meals and laundry!!!!

    So frustrating.

Can so relate to the meals and laundry!

My chest has eased, but sleeping easily  seems to be just a memory.

I start radio soon, what’s next for you?

  • Surgery....lumpectomy I think then radiotherapy. My appointment with surgeon is on tuesday. I had chemotherapy first.

  • Yes I also had this, it is hard. I found doing half hour to an hour of activity, then lying down and resting for 15/20 really helped, if I did too much in one go I’d be wiped out totally. If you can take it very easy and rest in between activities x

The chest pain is hard to describe.. occasional sharp pains on my left ish side and a sort of rushing feeling, makes me feel weak. That does make it sound like it’s something to do with my heart but they did so many checks last time I had this and couldn’t find anything wrong (X-ray, CT, ECG, bloods). It did subside eventually on last cycle and has picked up again on the exact same day after my this new cycle. They decided it was muscular skeletal...

good point about water. I did end up in a&e for something else a few days ago and they gave me fluids which made me feel a bit perkier temporarily. Maybe I should drink more...

Thank you for all your replies. I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had the same feelings!! It has however reassured me that it’s quite normal. I find it quite hard to allow myself to rest for long without feeling guilty that I should be doing something. Or frustrated! I’ve only got one session to go, finally, so I’m trying my best to stay motivated. But even though they said my hair would possibly start growing back on docetaxel (I’m cold capping), it’s started falling out in serious amounts and I have lots of bald patches which is making me feel like the signs of the chemo will show for a while to come...

Just take it a day at a time. I found the last round of chemo really hard and five months later I’m still recovering. I didn’t expect it to take so long to feel well, but it did take three months to stop aching and to regain some energy. This isn’t to frighten you, but to say please do rest. You will really need it for recovery.

    Sending a hug
