Due to have my 2nd round of Chemo on fri. I used the cold cap the first time but my hair has just started falling out in big amounts. I remember nurse telling me to bare with it for the first 10-15 mins as it get cold but I didnt even notice it getting that cold. I think it must have not been working properly. It has really effect led my mental health am trying my best to not break down especially in front of my 2 children. Nurse got me an urgent referral yesterday to a wig shop whi were really kind and lovely not sure how I made it out the house to get there but i did. None of the wigs really suited me without putting my hat over the top aswel so I did get one but I dont feel comfortable without my hat aswel. Just feel so rubbish at the moment.
Hi , had to reach out to you . Your post was heartbreaking to read . Before I got breast cancer , in some kind of former life , I was a hairdresser and have been involved in the hair and beauty industry for 35 years .
By the way I was diagnosed in August , tumours in both breasts , etc blah blah but I’m not here to talk about myself .
I just want to say that it’s tough when you start losing your hair . Over the years I have seen and worked with many women who have lost their hair , getting them back on track when it starts to grow back . Rest assured your hair will grow back . At the moment this is another cruel blow in what is already a cruel and heartless disease .
Now , thoughts on cold cap vary a lot . If you don’t get in with it don’t beat yourself up if you stop using . OK ? I know women who used the cap religiously and still lost all their hair .
Wigs . Ok . Think about this . Please don’t rush out to get one . Also any wig you choose should be cut whilst on your head for it to really suit you successfully and feel comfortable. I can help you with appropriate hairdressers if you would like .
Please please don’t feel alone . Your children will love you forever and get used very quickly to mum looking a bit different .
Let me know if I can help .
With love
Penelope xxx
Hi I just wanted to say hello. I may soon be following you with chemo and your words have really resonated with me. I don’t have any advice I can pass on but Penelope has offered some great advice. This bit must be so difficult but here is a great place to share and receive support. Take good care x
So sorry you feel this way . Losing my hair was very traumatic too and nothing prepares you for it . Have a look at the you tube channel getting wiggy with it . Also look at hair cube on Amazon for some fun wigs that are relatively inexpensive . I also bought a load of fun hats that helped a bit xxx
Hi Strawberry4
Sorry that you are feeling rubbish at the moment. I lost my hair after my second cycle of chemo. I was upset about it at first but once I got used to it I didn’t mind it. I didn’t bother with a wig I used a turban whenever I went out. My hair started to grow back shortly after my treatment stopped.
Take care of yourself.
Best wishes

Hi Strawberry4, I used cold cap but my hair also fell out but I didn’t loose all of it- it thinned and for the first 3-4 rounds I kept enough hair in the beginning that I could wear a cap when out And no one would have known. So you may not loose it all straight away like you would if you hadnt worn cold cap. I never completely lost it all which has helped I think now it’s growing back. I had the little I had left in the end cut into the new growth by my hairdresser. I did also buy a wig during treatment and then had it cut by a hairdresser like Penelope said and it made such a difference- I would really recommend if you don’t feel too comfortable with the one you have.
tbere is also a great charity called ‘look good feel better’ Ihttps://lookgoodfeelbetter.co.uk/ and they do lots of webinar sessions on how to style wigs/scarves, do make up and lashes, nails etc while going through treatment. They have some great Advice and lots of lovely free gifts if that is something that may help as well.
sending you a big virtual hug right now. Xxx
Hi , I too have been using cold cap. After my first chemo I did not lose any hair at all until 2 days before my second chemo when I lost a small amount but after 2nd cheno I have lost, I would say about 20% so far. I am trying not to think about it too much. My kids and husband have been so suppportive over it that I am trying to stay positive x
Thankyou so much for your kind words. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis too x I've managed to go out with my hat on to a couple of shops but I'd rather stay at home right now. My children are the only ones helping me push through it as I need to be strong for them. I am going for another wig appointment Next Tuesday they have alot more choice although I am grateful to the nhs for the wig I have it has helped me to leave the house at least. If it's ok I will get in touch for your help with hairdressers if I need help with the new wig. So kind of you to help me. Xx
