Hello everyone. I’m due to have right breast mastectomy with reconstruction and left breast lumpectomy. I was wondering if I can opt for a double mastectomy with reconstruction to ensure I have matching breasts but also wonder if this is a sensible option? I would be grateful for any advice. Many thanks in advance.
Most breast surgeons are unhappy to remove healthy breast tissue, which is why I ended up with lumpectomy on the left and mastectomy with implant reconstruction on the right. I saw my plastic surgeon yesterday and everyone is thrilled with my results - apart from the missing nipple and a few healing scars, you’d never know my right breast had been reconstructed. The symmetry is amazing.
I am really glad I opted for this solution and didn’t get freaked out by the idea of very asymmetrical breasts. If it hadn’t worked I could have gone for the DIEP lap flap surgery, which has a good record of symmetry, and it’s always an option to have further reconstruction on the lumpectomy side to match them up later. But so far, so good. Always remember you don’t have to do everything at once.
Hi Anabrock. It's amazing. I had near enough same as you - even had my follow up appt yesterday as well - what a co-incidence. Just got to moisturise more (cracked nipple and all scars checked and a bit dry) and mammogram booked up for the left one.
