Hello - First time posting here.

I had breast cancer several years ago but this question is about my mum who is due to get her full test results on Friday.

Is it possible to get her treatment transferred to a hospital close to me, so I can take her in for treatments as she doesn't drive and her current hospital is over an hour away from her with no public transport links? Has anyone done this before and how easy is it to organise with NHS treatment?

Thanks

  • Hi Dogsandcakes welcome to the forum. Im not sure about the question that you are asking. Are you going with your mum to get the results on Friday or not? If you were this is a question that you could have asked them then or when you know what the plan is for your mum,. maybe call the Breast Nurse and have a chat and see what the options are for you and your mum.

Sorry - I should have been clearer. Thanks for the fast response.

I will be on the phone with her when she gets her results - that's not the problem. We know from the preliminary results that she has cancer, so I'm now thinking about how we make sure she can get to her treatments most easily after she has the results.

I want to be ready with some options for her to help her cope.

  • Hello dogsandcakes. When I was diagnosed I was offered the chance of having my treatment at the hospital nearest to me, or at the hospital which conducted the initial tests and made the diagnosis which is further away, and I chose the one further away as it is a better hospital. They were both within the same hospital Trust though so that was probably why they offered the option - is the hospital close to you run by the the same Trust as your mum's current one? No harm in asking if they would let your mum transfer to another hospital but I guess that you need to think through the situation before deciding either way.

From experience there are lots of tests and treatments with frequent hospital visits, sometimes at short notice. If you were unable to take your mum to hospital for some reason would she be able to get to the hospital close to you easily by herself? Could you drive her to appointments at her local hospital if necessary? When you know what her treatment plan is, and over how long a period, you'll be in a better position to decide. Hope you can arrange something which is best for your mum and as already posted, the nurse might be the best person to ask as consultants/surgeons tend to leave those sorts of conversations to others to deal with. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

    Thank you LalaLou.

It's good to know that location options are offered in the first place.

I can't take her to her local hospital and she can't get there easily on her own. She lives 5 hours drive away from me and doesn't drive herself.

We'll see what they say tomorrow and I'll have a conversation with the nurse as you and Granny59 suggested. I'm sure they'll do their best to help find a good solution. :)
