Starting Tamoxifen & radiotherapy

Hi all, my hormone tests came back and despite my lack of periods I’m not through menopause yet, so no Letrizole for me. I’m ER positive. Instead I’m starting on Tamoxifen. The only side effect that concerns me is that it can make fibroids worse and I already have ginormous fibroids. But I’m under the gynae for that so hopefully it won’t be too bad. I can see me ending up with a hysterectomy quite soon though.

Im getting preventative radiotherapy on the left breast, where I only had the lumpectomy. Fortunately I’m getting the 5 day, high intensity treatment, and they’re only treating the affected half of my breast, which avoids my needing to breath hold (I have chronic asthma). It reduces my risk of recurrence by 50%, although that's 50% of a really low number in my case.

I'm starting Tamoxifen in the next few days and radiotherapy in 4 weeks, but all I want for Christmas is you... I mean, to be cancer free. Looks like I'm getting my wish.

Experiences of Tamoxifen would be good to hear

  • Hello. Have a read of the 'Oestrogen reducing medications' thread here: https://community.macmillan.org.uk/cancer_types/chat-breast-cancer/f/questions-about-diagnosis-and-treatment/208210/oestrogen-reducing-medications

If you also type in tamoxifen on the search function, there have been other threads too. All I can recommend is to start taking them with an open mind. I was very worked up about taking them. For the first 5 weeks, I had bouts of nausea and felt rough with the hot flushes but I was taking pill in morning. Switched to taking it with dinner so full tum and then sleep so side effects calmed down a lot. Still the odd hot flush and the odd day of feeling sick but not as bad. Side effects will be different for each one and its only until you take them you have to see how you go. you may get none or they may be mild but they most likely will be stronger at the start as your body gets used to the drug. also maybe recall how you feel on them - there is a huge debate about brand and the fillers they use so if you're a bit 'off' with them, get your pharmacist on one side and try a different brand - there are a lot out there.

My skin has become drier so still slapping on lots of moisturiser morning and night inc by left boob (as the affected one). If i feel off the tablet gets the blame! good luck x
