Diagnosis following mastectomy (bit confused)

Hi I'm not sure if any of you lovely ladies can help with advice as I'm still a bit in the air about my diagnosis. I was told I had DCIS following mammogram and two biopsies plus MRI week before surgery and had a mastectomy with two lymph nodes removed. Follow up appointment month after surgery and was told it was 70 mm DCIS and 2 mm IDC and lymph nodes were clear. A lot of ladies talk about grades, stages and numbers regarding postitive, negative. I was never told anything apart from the size of the lumps after surgery and that I have to take tamoxifen for 5 years. Not sure if  I have missed being told some information from my consultant or not. Thanks for reading.

  • Hi, I was never given a stage or any numbers, just the size and I knew it was grade 3, so aggressive and that's why I had chemo first. Have you had any letters from the consultant confirming your cancer, as I think this information could be on these.  Maybe have a chat with your consultant and see what they say, or ask your GP as they should have your letters on file and can explain them.

  • At some point you should get a copy of the official diagnosis letter sent to your GP, but all you really need to know at this stage is that it’s being dealt with. I haven’t been given a stage or official prognosis yet

As the ladies below have mentioned you should receive a copy of the notes from your consultation appointments that are addressed to your GP.

I received mine a few days following my Surgeon and then oncologist meetings.  These notes clearly state the type and size of tumour being addressed and the proposed treatment.  If you have had a number of appointments and haven't received any notes yet I would query it with your    treatment team/ breast care nurse or GP
