Hi while I’m sat here in hospital I thought it might be helpful to share some practical tips. I have been in for 6 days now. In your bag: the first few days you are pretty out of it but you will have on your bra. Front fasting and support, however I brought a sports bra and the material really hurt my scars. So tea shirt material best the softer the better. You will be showing your flap regularly at first every 15 minutes so front fasting is a must. Also take a few as they get dirty from little leaks and you are kept hot so sweat a lot. Black best colour. High wasted knickers; you want o make sure they don’t rub on you tummy incision so higher the better, I got mine from M&S Slippers and dressing gown;. Keep them with your bag or bring a second pair of slippers or something for your feet. They lost my slippers and dressing down as I went to surgery in them. Also put name in everything. I didn’t so they are gone for good. Nighty, front buttons and have 3. I have pjs which are ok but warm at night and only one pair! Remember once on ward you live in them. Face clothes; This has been great for washing but also at night to go one my head with cold water to cool you down. Take a few . You want to stay clean and everything get dirty faster. Face moistures are a welcome relief as your skin gets dry. A light book or magazine. You struggle to hold to anything, things including your phone for too long. Concentration is limited too due to meds. Ear buds (wireless ear phones); these have been great as only you can here what your loved ones are saying on the phone. I also brought mindfulness music on my phone (easy listening) when you hear the man in the next bed ask for a bed pan at 2 in the morning you definitely don’t want to hear that! But also there is a lot of beeping from machines in the High dependency ward and this still helps you relax or sleep as the music is so calming. I also downloaded audible books on my phone and that got me through the last night on the high dependency ward. There was no windows so no day light and that is hard. Fleece jacket; ( easy as covers top half of you when sitting in bed). Bed socks sometimes it’s just your feet that get cold and it’s a change from slippers. Baby y wipes; another great as you can use these to freshen up if you don’t feel up to bathroom trip. I was off my catheter 2 days after which was good as it makes you walk. Walk as much as you are able it helps right everything and you feel better for that little bit of independence. I went to the next county from where we live so my husband would have had a 2 hour drive to bring things in so it’s not really an option. There is no visiting unless I go meet them in the cafe( it’s not prison) however, not felt up to that yet. I would have been able to go home sooner but an ear infection! (I’m prone to these) has kept me here. So now wish I had clean things to put on. Well I hope this helps, bring all the other usual stuff toiletries, lip balm ( I d’t have) if you can take a photo of your medications you’ve had previously for infection it might come in handy because the doctors ask you and logging onto apps Nhs etc, can be difficult so pictures are good and easy to find. I needed to let them know which antibiotic I take. Sorry if this is a bit over the place I blame the meds!! . Every is positive my lymph nodes show nothing so fingers crossed for the next stage for me. My breast do actually look good! Although getting rid of the cancer is a priority this operation is major surgery and be prepared for that. Good luck to you if you have got this far I am guessing you are having or thinking of having this done. The nhs staff are fab and look after you really well. The are professionals . Xx
I rang the hospital, apparently they have to send the MRI results to another hospital to be read by another consultant like a 2nd opinion. Should get them back early next week and then they will call me back in to discuss and do a treatment plan. X
Well done for ringing them, so frustrating that they don’t think to tell you these things as a matter of course, so you know where you stand…. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you that you get some response and your treatment plan early next week… please keep updating. I have now had my pre-op and covid test booked, my CT scan was ok - so fingers crossed op should go ahead on 14th, but still have to have my sentinel lymph nodes removed and resulted before then, which I’ve been going on about for at least six weeks….. you certainly do have to keep on the ball for it to keep rolling - Mickey xx
Hi MickeyM it’s been a tough couple of weeks as it’s a sore op. I have been put on antibiotics as a precaution of infection but wounds are healing well. Some days I’m very tired but today I have felt more like myself. My tummy is healing well, still a bit numb. My reconstructed one is very bruised and wounds have leaked a little the other one where they resized is doing well. I have struggled remembering what drugs I took when so I used a pill box first week and then when just on injections and pain killers I have been recording times on my phone. I found that helps me keep track as the day just disappears especially if I fall asleep ( which I do a lot! Lol) never been a napper so strange! I do rattle lol! I have had to keep on support sticking and injections for 4 weeks so another week or so left of those. I am really lucky as my husband has been amazing ( even brought me an eternity ring as he missed me and I think all this has scared him too). He has started back at work now so those days can be long. I am walking every day but not too far from home. I had a lot of strange symptoms before surgery and they are still there was hoping they would be gone but maybe when I’m recovered. I am still waiting on pathology hopefully in a week or two! . First week home it took all my energy to have a shower but that’s getting easier so everyday gets a little better. How you feeling about it all?. After that first week I wouldn’t have gone back into hospital for anything but that is easing now. I get fed up some days not being able to do much, not leaving the house or doing housework or exercise but watched lots of Christmas movies, done all my shopping on line and read a little. Walked and enjoy the fresh air particularly today as we have snow!! Everyone heals differently but the nurse at the clinic said I was doing really well. They say the first 4 weeks are the hardest and I can believe them! But I have to admit waking up and still having my own skin around a new breast is very reassuring. I am a lot smaller gone from an E cup to probably a C cup and lost some inches from my waist so looking forward to a new wardrobe! Be Interesting as my arms and legs are still a size 20 but no tummy lol. I had lost weight before surgery just over a stone I am now 2 stone lighter! There are definitely some positives! But I don’t know how people do this for elective surgery!!! I wasn’t the fittest of people I do a lot of yoga and I think that has helped with my arm as there doesn’t seem to be too much stiffness there. Been doing the exercises they gave me originally and they help. If you have any questions send me a friend request and I can answer anything, particularly when you come out. Your very near Christmas so it maybe a quiet one for you again this year . Lots of hugs x
Hi Glad I can help. It’s hard going some days but on the whole going in the right direction. It’s definitely a bigger op than I realised and you will need to look after yourself and no rushing to do everything, think that’s the hard bit. Fingers crossed for your date and here if you need to ask me anything. Good luck xx
Hi Alibarbar, did you get your second opinion ? Are you any further forward now? Mickey x
