Just wondered if you can help. I have had two chemo cycles using cold cap, some hair has been shedding but it's only noticeable to me.  My hair is long and usually thick, I wanted to get it cut to shoulder length but have read that this puts stress on the hair?? Any thoughts?? Would be a dry cut no styling, I havnt straightened or blow dried in months .....Just cos im too lazy really, but it's very dry and I think they extra weight possibly isn't helping. Xxx

  • Hi, this info should help you. If in any doubt, you can contact Cancer Hair Care for advice.

I cold capped but didn’t get my hair cut until after I’d finished chemo. I visited Cancer Hair Care’s place in Stevenage and had it done there.

Best wishes for the rest of your treatment x

  • Hi Lfc74

I’ve had 4 cycles of EC using cold cap and have lost quite a bit of hair but can still just about get away with it by careful styling.  I looked into this on various hair/cancer sites and read that having shorter hair is helpful because it doesn’t drag so much on the scalp, plus shorter hair tends to look thicker/more volumous.
I totally sympathise with your situation - although my hair is not long (I had it trimmed before chemo) it has gone extremely dry, and I hate the feel of it, so am tempted to get it trimmed again just to get rid of the very dry ends.

I suppose you might want to consider whether having long hair gives you the option of an “up-do” if you get too thin on top!  Otherwise I guess the important thing, as NBI’s link says, is to make sure your hairdresser knows the situation and is careful with your hair when they cut it.

    Best of luck xxx

  • Thanks, always lots of conflicting information which is why it's better asking people who are experiencing it. I'm going to get it dry cut no styling, I havnt been blow drying it anyway to try and protect it and my hair dresser knows my situation so will be gentle. I think it can't make it any worse, will hopefully make it easier for me to comb each day xx

First let me say well done you ClapClapClapClap for sticking with the cold cap. I managed the first one but decided it’s wasn’t for me and as two weeks after first using it my hair was falling out, loads daily, I decided it wasn’t worth the added stress on top of feeling rubbish and other complications  with the chemo.  My hair was falling out so much when long and became so thin,I decided to cut it to shoulders  and I’ve lost  a lot less since cutting it. It doesn’t look as thin than it actualy is.
I admire you for sticking with it and do hope you have the  results it offers.  You got this.
