wound healing during chemotherapy > experiences?

Hello,
So, I had two lumpectomies (first one margins were not clear) and after the second, a small part of my wound didn't heal. It's superficial, only about 1x1cm but it's going through secondary wound healing rather than primary. I've been and am still going to a special wound dresser at the clinic to have it checked and dressed regularly - but oncology eventually decided we needed to start chemotherapy anyway, because the window was closing for it to be useful.
Now: I have 4 cycles of TC until Christmas, I did get my first already last week.
Oncology thinks the wound will not heal at all anymore, it'll just "stay as is". My surgeon thinks it'll get worse and was unhappy because chemo had to be started. The wound dresser says she cannot know at all, she doesn't want to say anything.

Did any of you have small wounds that still healed during chemotherapy? What are your experiences?

Nobody ever says how other patients fared, but I'm sure I wasn't the only one ever with this issue.

Thank you
Colibri

  • Hi there,

Gosh that sounds unpleasant. During chemo I did have some VERY small wounds - cuts on my hands etc - which took an age to heal. Like weeks longer than I'd normally expect. But they did heal ok in the end, whilst I was still going through chemo.

I agree that very slow wound healing is an effect of chemo that's never mentioned!

I do hope your wound will be okay. Best of luck with chemo.

  • Yeah, I figured that it wasn't gonna get easy, but as long as it's not gonna get worse and perhaps only gradually better (you know, little steps), for me that'll be OK. Thank you for your kind words!

  • Hi Colibri

a small part of my scar (about 4mm) opened up just before my first chemo - I think I’d been overdoing the stretches!  I was concerned to avoid infection so I used antiseptic spray on the wound every morning after my shower, and kept it covered with plasters.  It did heal after about 3-4 weeks, so probably slower than if I hadn’t been having chemo, but the healing process didn’t stop altogether.
    best of luck!

  • Thank you, Jomor, that sounds promising! Slow is better than no progress! :)
