Hi all
I joined this forum last week and have read lots of posts which has been a great comfort to me since my diagnosis three weeks ago. I am 56 and was due to have my routine mammogram when shortly before I found a lump in my breast. I have had cysts in the past so was hoping this would be the same diagnosis. I never bothered contacting my doctor and just waited to have my mammogram.
After my mammogram I got recalled and underwent a core biopsy, followed by a vacuum assisted biopsy a few weeks later. The doctor did confirm during my biopsies that I had a cluster of cysts and thought they were just doing belt and braces with the procedures I had. I was totally shocked when given my results and told I had DCIS. At first I didn’t take in what the surgeon was telling me and although told it wasn’t invasive didn’t really understand my diagnosis until afterwards when I read all the leaflets I was given to take home with me. I felt so thankful it was caught at such an early stage.
I have my surgery on Tuesday, a lumpectomy, followed possibly by radiotherapy and hormone therapy depending on the lab results. I was told my cancer cells were intermediate and oestrogen positive and measured 5cm. The breast nurse said that the cells may of all been removed during my biopsies so if I have clear margins I might not need radiotherapy. Personally after reading other patient experiences I would definitely feel better receiving radiotherapy and this is what worries me more than anything that I won’t be offered this.
I am feeling ok and tbh feels like it’s not really happening. I hope it’s not going to hit me head on after my op!

Hi hope everything goes well for you Tuesday, I had a lumpectomy in July for a 21mm lobular cancer, I was very tired for about 2 days after but recovered well and was back driving after 2 weeks, I also felt like it wasn’t happening and to be honest I still do, it just seems so unreal. From what I understand there are 3 levels of DCIS, low, intermediate and High, so as you said you might not need radiotherapy. I think that if it is not really needed and there are clear margins they prefer not to give it because they can only give it once.
Good luck for Tuesday, let us know how you are

Hi Di 54
Thanks for your reply, I’m glad to hear you have recovered well from your surgery. Yes your right, I never really thought about the fact they can only give radiotherapy the once! I was just more concerned about the reoccurrence and was thinking that this way it would prevent it from returning. Did you have any further treatment going forward or just the surgery?
xx
Is it 5mm or 5cm of DCIS? I only ask as nurse said it might have all been removed during biopsy - that isn't be possible if 5cm. I had 11mm in 2015. On biopsy told intermediate, after surgery it was identified as high grade . I had 15 sessions of radiotherapy. You can only have radiotherapy to the breast once but I wasn't given the option to refuse !
Hi Carol
i thought the nurse said 5cm but maybe she did say 5mm with saying it could all of been removed during my two biopsies? If that’s the case I would think Its very likely I will have clear margins? I was told mine was intermediate and oestrogen positive so maybe that’s a factor for going ahead with surgery rather than just monitoring. The hormone therapy was mentioned but I’m not looking forward to being on that after reading some of the side effects the ladies on here have suffered.
Well done for being 5 years clear and taking the time to answer my post xx
Hi sparkles8 as mine was invasive I also had a sentinel node biopsy which turned out that 2 had cancer so I had them all removed just over 2 weeks ago and I’m now waiting to find out my results and my plan going forward but I’ll probably be having chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy.
They usually find out more information when they send the area removed to pathology after surgery.

Hi Diane
Sorry still navigating around site and have just read your profile! Wow you have certainly been through it and your diagnosis has changed so much following surgery! That is a little scary and must of been hard for you to take in! It’s seems weird not to have had any dressings after surgery so I’m not surprised that worried you. I had terrible bruising after my biopsies and still have some now! Good luck for your plan going forward and let us know how you get on xx
