The longest wait

Hello all you lovely ladies and gents.

Wondering if any of you have similar experiences of long waits for surgery.

I know that the breast nurses say nothing bad will happen in the shortish time while you wait for surgery but I'm having occasional twinges, probably from the biopsy scar / healing. When this happens it just feels like I'm having to wait so long for surgery and I really just want it sorted. The wait feels never ending!

I had my diagnosis on 18th August and the plan is for mastectomy and immediate diep reconstruction. I know that it takes longer to get the surgery date when having a reconstruction but at the moment I'm worried that it's too long. At my last appointment I talked with the reconstruction surgeon and he said surgery will hopefully be late October early November. I have another appointment with this same surgeon on 22nd October but the letter doesn't say what for.

Does this seem like a long wait to you guys? My bc is very small - 7.8mm and grade 2 with no mets shown on ct scan.

Thank you for reading. Any reassurance would be great x

  • My surgeon said the benefit of finding cancer early is that you’ve plenty of time to plan the ideal treatment plan. Most breast cancers don’t grow that fast - even the so called fast growing ones. If it wasn’t safe to wait for immediate reconstruction they’d do the surgery earlier and put an expander in or something like that. They wouldn’t risk your safety.

Thank you. That makes so much sense.

Hi. I had op last Friday after 7 week wait. About 2 weeks before op I started to get even more anxious.  My mass was about 17mm grade 2. Recovering well from double reduction where they did lumpectomy. They took 1 kg from each boob!!

I'm now worrying about results on 19th in case it's spread. Trying to tell myself my cancer journey is life long and will always be a case of waiting for next appointment,  next stage etc. And so I need to learn to live with that. Even if it hasn't spread I will need radiotherapy and many years of hormone treatment,  extra mammograms etc.  I guess I'm trying to say go with it where you can. You may be watching the hours and days tick by with nothing happening.  However behind the scenes the experts will be coordinating the best treatment plan for you.  Always here to chat. X

Thank you - I'll try to go with it a bit more. After all - they're the experts.

Glad you're recovering well and hope you get good news on 19th. Fingers crossed
