Hi all can anyone recommend a good shampoo and conditioner to use during chemo. Seen lots online but hoping for real life recommendations. Xx

  • These are the experts www.cancerhaircare.co.uk, a lot of ladies like me wouldn't have had any hair through chemo so cannot help.

  • Hi Lfc74  welcome to the forum. You need  a really  gentle shampoo with no perfume in it, something like The Simple brand of products or baby shampoo as a couple of examples.

  • Hi

I was using the cold cap during my chemo and purchased the Paxman shampoo and conditioner which is formulated specially as it’s mild and free of preservatives.  I guess any brand that has those same properties would be fine, and probably less expensive!

Best of luck with your treatment.

  • Thank you all for reply, I'm starting chemo on Monday and have googled the paxman range. There's just so many brands don't mind the expense if people recommend, thanks again x

  • I had the cold cap and used Simple shampoo and conditioner during chemo. I found it very good it was recommended to me by the chemo unit. Hope all goes well on Monday x

  • Hey , did the cold cap work?  I told my oncologist no as he said it would add 2 hours to the chemo, which is already going to take 5 hours . Now I am questioning if it may be worth it .  Any advice ?

  • I used the cold cap and it worked really well. My hair got thinner all over and I had 2 small bald patches but once I brushed my hair you couldn’t see them. My cousin came to visit expecting me to be bald and couldn’t believe it was still my own hair and not a wig (I did have one just in case ). The cold cap does add time but I took my iPad or a book in to help pass time and if you can get past the initial 10/15 mins of it you actually get used to it. Best tip I got was layer up with clothing to keep warm and keep your feet warm. My chemo nurse kept the cups of tea coming as well to keep me toasty.

  • Hi

I used Simple shampoo during chemo. I started to lose my hair  around 2 weeks after my first round of EC. I had 3x EC and 12 weekly Paclitaxel.  My hair did start to slowly grow back while on Paclitaxel. When my chemo had finished I switched to Faith in Nature Rosemary shampoo and conditioner.  This was recommended on the cancerhaircare website .

    Hope this helps

    Take care xx

  • Thanks all. Really useful knowing what works for people xx

  • I lost my hair during chemo, but since it has started growing back I have not used any shampoo at all and it is in the best condition it has ever been in!

I just washed in water twice a day for the first few months (it was very slow to start growing back) and then I started using a great intensive hair mask conditioner twice a week and then when it got a bit longer, I started also using a co-wash (a conditioner designed to be used alone without shampoo) and I also use leave-in conditioners.

I avoid anything with SLS, parabens etc and go for organic or natural. There is a lot out there now that doesn't cost the earth.

The best leave in conditioner I have found is Garnier ultimate blends (I was using this pre-cancer too)

And the best conditioner/mask/wash I use is Shea Moisture 10 in 1 Superfruit complex. It smells divine and leaves your hair clean, soft and gorgeous!
