So last week my right breast started to hurt. I didn't think much of it as sometimes that happens around my cycle. But by Friday it was really painful, so called the doctor. He gave me antibiotics, but told me I had to go in as he was concerned over my description of the pain as he said it did not sound normal.

Monday I went into the doctors. She was lovely, but obviously concerned. My nipple is 5 times larger on one side and there is an obviously lump My right breast also feels different to my left. She said it could be an infection, however, it is not presenting like an infection, I have no temperature, I am not in any risk group for infection and since the antibiotics it has got worse not better. So she has referred me for an urgent referral to the cancer clinic at the hospital.

Reading other peoples comments in places it seems there could be a little bit of a wait for this I have been told I should be seen within two weeks, so 19th October. If I dont hear anything I am to call the doctor back. Doing some research on google (I know its the worst place to get information), it presents most like IBC but could be pagets disease. A close friend of mine died two years ago after an 8yr battle with breast cancer, so you can imagine I am pretty scared she was only 35. I have two people that I care for and I am wondering how on earth I will continue to do this if the worst is diagnosed. And I have no support. No friends or family near me. Which is now highlighted because I am so worried about this.

I know that both pagets and IBC are extremely rare forms of BC. So I could be worried for nothing. I think the worst is definately not knowing. I feel a bit of a fraud messaging here when I haven't had a diagnoses. But you will all know what I am currently going through. The dreaded wait. And its also so painful. If I remove my bra its even worse so I end up keeping it on so the boob doesnt move. But it still hurts everytime the fabric rubs against it.

    Hi sky3x

This is the most difficult time the waiting I had a referral made in June and saw  breast surgeon 3 weeks later so a little bit of a longer wait, but not much. You have done the right thing by going straight away to the doctor's. Most lumps are not cancer but sadly some are. At you first appointment you will usually  have a mammogram  a scan with a biopsy. All at the same time . It is often at this time you will be given the news that either the consultant is worried about the lump or they are not. Nothing can be confirmed untill pathology report comes back. This is the hardest part and can be quite draining on times . Please remember that you are young and most cancer's are in older women and most lumps are not cancer.  However, knowing this doesn't mean that you will relax I expect your mind is working overtime . Hoping everything turns out well for you

Hi love. I'm sure your head is popping with all sorts of scenarios. I'm new to this. Diagnosed 8 weeks ago, had big op last week. As so many people say the waiting is such a hard time. Your head will be bouncing. You will find this forum so supportive  and hopefully you won't feel quite so alone. If you care for others you can contact social care at the appropriate council. If you are not able to do what you usually do for others for a while they can get help. It would be advisable to let them know that things may change for a while. Plus it's one more thing you can tick off as sorted out. Try n take it one day at a time. We are all here if you need to chat. X

I am dreading the first appointment. Its presenting like inflammatory breast cancer, and is extremely painful. So I imagine them poking at my breast is going to be painful too. Its so bad I actually feel like I dont care if its removed.

I had an abscess in my other breast when I was pregnant, but this feels a lot worse. Also doctor said its very rare for me to have an infection, as I haven't recently had a baby, I am not pregnant and don't have a partner (apparently playing with boobs increases risk of infection). Plus no temperature and my nipple has gone a weird shape! Which is reason for her referring me, so she is obviously concerned. Which just frightens me more. She did say though that most cases are not cancer. Usually its something else, but best to rule it out regardless.

Although it would be rare and unusual for me to have an infection, it is even more unusual or rare for me to have IBC, as I am not in any risk category for breast cancer either. I know its no good guessing I have to just wait until I know for sure at my appointment. Does the biopsy hurt? I am a big wimp when it comes to pain, especially when the area is already extremely painful

  • Hello Sky3x

Sorry that it is on here that we meet. You are correct when you say that we will all know how you feel. The waiting is torture. With regard to the biopsy: tell the staff how you feel. You get local anaesthetic for this and at my biopsy they were very careful to test that I was numb and to top up the anaesthetic when I thought I could feel a bit. Obviosly we would all prefer not to have needed biopsy. However, it is very doable and the team at your clinic will be well used to doing these without causing pain.

Wishing you all the best & sending big hugs to you.

    Take care

    Hi Sky3x

No the tests do not hurt ,you will have a local anesthesia before the biopsy . scans are painless and are just used to guild the doctor to the lump. A mammogram will just swash your breasts a little but again its very quick and not usually painful. These tests take  just a couple of minutes .

Best to get it ruled out , and you can then stop worrying x

I didn't know they used anaesthesia. I was just expecting them to be poking around without numbing at all. I know it has to be done to rule out things and get me the right treatment. I feel a little less scared knowing that they numb the area. Glad I joined here just for that piece of information. Feeling very alone. I live so far from my family. Would have prefered to have took my sister with me for morale support in all honesty.. But I have to go alone. Will I be ok to drive after a biopsy? Or will I need to book a taxi? I am guessing as its such a minor procedure for this I should be ok to take myself to the appointment

  • I drove myself to appointments and couldn't take anyone. you will feel a little sore after biopsy but as someone else said they do give you local to numb area. the bruising may look worse than it feels as boobs are quite sensitive. you may want to take some painkillers before you go which may help x

Hi. I would be lying if I said a biopsy won't hurt. I didn't find it too bad and I'm sure they will take your pain into account.  I would have some paracetamol an hour before your appointment which wll help. The staff will be very supportive and guide you through it.  Remember, whilst at the moment you don't know what it is, you will be in good hands with experts to get to the bottom of it and srt out whatever treatment you might need.  You're already  on the journey to getting it sorted. Keep us updated,  we're in this together . Heart

  • If it’s not numb enough say so and get more local anaesthetic. I tried to be brave at first which was pointless as they are always happy to inject a little more
