Trying to think of every question I should ask the breast surgeon. Here is what I have come up with. Am I missing anything?
Can systemic treatment continue in the run up to surgery?
What are my surgical options and why?
How long would the surgery take?
What happens during surgery?
Likelihood of needing a blood transfusion?
What should I expect when waking up after surgery?
How soon after surgery can I get out of bed, have a shower?
Length of hospital stay?
Date for surgery or expected time frame for wait
Any instructions regarding preparation, such as food and drink just before surgery, anything else?
Is tissue going to be sent to pathology and if so, time frame for report?
What symptoms to watch for once back home, what needs to be reported fast, and to whom?
Recovery time after surgery?
When and with whom the follow up appointment after surgery?
What follow up treatment would I need after each surgical option?
Which ward would I be on and what are the contract numbers for the ward, scheduling, any pre-assessment nurse?
Wow I hadn’t thought of asking half of those . I would also ask about visiting and how soon can I drive again.
Good questions but bear in mind that some questions and therefore responses depend on diagnosis (not sure if you've had this). Also the surgeon won't know some practicalities like no 10 and 16 as that's done by hospital admin. If you've had diagnosis you may also get more from breast care nurse. I found my surgeon only went through surgery and what was needed and left the rest of the details to nurse. Also the hospital had and probably still has extra measures in place for covid so some rules have changed. I wish I'd thought to ask some of these. Good luck x
One question I would ask, and did is "What happens if I have a problem whilst I'm at home, after the chosen surgery ?" Who do I contact ? Will you see me, or Clinic or what ? I say this because I did have problems and could not have gone to the Breast Clinic as so far away and felt very unwell - kept fainting. Panicking husband called Outpatients where I had surgery - they didn't want to know, told him to call 111, he couldn't get through. Later BCN told him he should have phoned 999.
I’m also having surgery soon so this is really help, some great questions on your list I hadn’t thought of. I’m also planning to ask
that’s all I can think of for now but I’m sure there’s plenty more to ask, like others have said I’m sure the nurse will answer most of them rather than the surgeon. Do you have a pre op appointment booked? x
