Having been unfortunate enough to have had a bilateral mastectomy.

My question to those like me who have had both sides operated on do you think that there is enough help and understanding for people who have both sides affected. I don't think that I have received enough understanding of how difficult it can be when both sides and  arms  are affected.

Any videos I see , apart from my own physios,  are for people who have one side affected. Often they will say " use your non operated side to help you do this and that"  ! Furthermore , we all know that cording and seromas are painful but no full understanding that for us bilaterals, double the pain.

Often  you hear  women  told to sleep on your non operated side or back . But what about me? Just my back then? Won't be long before I have a bad back. When you read advice about doing daily tasks it often says  " just let your non operated side do the work for a bit"  I wanted leaflets and advice for a double mastectomy patient. Has anyone else found  that there is little understanding that there can be added difficulty for patients in this situation either double lumpectomy or mastectomy?

Cheers

I am 4 weeks post bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction. I am in no pain now following op but getting back pain every night whilst trying to sleep. I have been getting up when I am waking up and doing some of my post op stretching exercises to relieve the pain on my back. I agree little information for bilateral mastectomy and can't wait until I start back doing my yoga and have a good stretch!

Thankyou we are in the minority aren't we . Did you have cancer in both breasts like me?

I had a lump in my left breast and pre cancerous cells in right breast so decided that double mastectomy reduced the risk of my right breast developing a lump and having to go through the op and treatment again.

Yes I understand . I was worried that if I had lumpectomys that it might cone back and it nearly finished me off to find out both breasts affected  so I just went for it I glad I did but not so much support X never mind it is what it is

Like you said I don't think bilateral is as common, my surgeon and hospital have been great and I have had alot of aftercare due to some of my wounds not healing as quickly as expected. Now hoping healing speeds up as due to start chemo in 2 weeks.

You take care and maybe this is something that Macmillan could look at in the future.

  • Hi Jayne , we’re you giving options for lumpectomy or mastectomy?   My lump is large and the doctor has said I may get away with a lumpectomy.  My first instinct was I want it all gone.   I get further results tomorrow to see if my EPC cancer is invasive , in which case a mastectomy will be called for.

I hope you get through your chemo ok , I have been following your journey .   Deb x

Hi Deb, it was my choice I was given options . I hope you're results are good . Such a hard time I think it was easier as I had it in both breasts so I knew it could come back at me with another lump . Thanks Deb what a journey ! Heart scan today went ok chemotherapy next week I think it's a bummer .

    Take care X

  • I’m just at the beginning of my journey, and have cancer in both breasts, invasive ductal right side, lobular left side. I am beginning to realise this is quite unusual, and I agree that there doesn’t seem to be much out there for us bilateral ladies. Your posts are very interesting reading foPrayme, and your experiences are so useful. Will follow and appreciate this thread PrayPray
