Dental Issues after Radiotherapy

Has anyone had dental issues after radiotherapy for breast cancer?  I’ve had lots of pain in upper & lower jaws - opposite side to treatment.  Also, through the roof of my mouth & tongue too.  X-rays show problems which dentist said could be set off by treatment.  Pain is improving.

Hi April2020 welcome to the forum. Im not sure if the Radiotherapy itself could have that effect, as it is very targeted to the area being treated. That said the whole treatment  journey does I think lower our immune system and brings on ails that we have never experienced before so that could be happening for you..

Im not sure about you but I felt stressed but didnt always realise it and was grinding my teeth and holding my jaw very tightly which resulted in painful areas of my jaw and mouth. Could this be  a possibility as well or not?

  • Hi April

Sounds a bit strange to me if it is on the opposite side to the RT. I dont think it will be directly due to the exposure to RT.

Maybe if you are under stress, it could be that you are grinding teeth or clenching teeth?? This can happen during sleep too, so you might not be aware of it......

Good that it is getting better.

    Wishing you all the best

  • Hi I think I read somewhere that the 6 bone strengthening infusions that some people get over 3 years can cause problems with jaw bones. If you are having these biphosphonate infusions , maybe phone or ask dentist. I’m having these so I’m sure I remember reading this.

  • Sorry I see you have asked dentist already x
