Covid and surgery

I have invasive ductal carcinoma in the right breast, with a tumour of ~35mm, and was due to have a mastectomy and immediate reconstruction today.  However, my son tested positive for C-19 on Sunday.  Although I hadn't been in contact with him since the Friday (he'd been away on Scout camp), my operation was postponed for two weeks

I've chosen to stay away from home since Sunday - to minimise the chance of infection.  But now my husband has also tested positive.

My question is this.  If I do test positive, does anyone know if there is a recommended delay between recovering from Covid and being able to have surgery?

Having braced myself for the surgery, I just want it over with.  I'm just about getting my head around this first delay, and I'm now worried that there'll have to be a much longer one.

I know there are so many what-ifs, and hopefully I won't test positive too, but I thought I'd ask if anyone had experience of this.

Thanks!

  • Hi Spooncarver

Sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with Breadt Cancer. While I don’t have the experience you are looking  for I noticed that you hadn’t had any answers yes and I thought I’d write to you so that you can move up to the top of the discussion in the hope that someone will come along with an answer for you. If no one does maybe you could contact the Macmillan support line and they will no doubt be able to advice you.

Wishing you the best of luck with your surgery when you have it.

    Best wishes

  • Hi

Not me but my sisters friend tested positive the day of her operation last year - they had mixed up her results, so she was ready for theatre and then was unceremoniously dumped out of the hospital … as soon as she was over the ten days /tested negative she was operated on , so she was delayed by about three weeks I think x

Fingers crossed you stay clear and safe x

Thanks for replying @jowoomot.  That must have been an awful experience for your sister's friend.  It's encouragjng to hear that they didn't delay the op very much.  I feared that there might be a cautious further postponement.

    • I do hope I've dodged it, but it seems to be so unpredictable.

Just an update....  I have now tested positive for C-19.  My newly rescheduled surgery date is 6th October, and I come out of my 10 isolation period 8 days before that.  I will soon find out if they delay surgery after Covid!

  • Hi. I was diagnosed with breast cancer just over 2 weeks ago. Luckily I had my pre op and mri scan done very quickly, because I caught covid last Monday and have been quite poorly with it too. I had a call from my breast nurse to say they want to operate in the next couple of weeks to remove the cancer and lymph nodes , so I'm keeping everything crossed that my operation isn't postponed.  Who knows we may be going through our operations together. Good luck and wishing you a speedy recovery . Xx

Hi .  That does sound really positive.  Do you know yet which surgery you're having?  Let me know when you get a date.  And Good luck! X

  • I'm having the lumpectomy and a few lymph nodes removed.  Of course I will let you know my dates . We can keep each other company while we recover.  Keep us updated on yourself too xx

  • Sorry to hear that you have Covid Spooncarver. Hopefully your operation won’t be delayed because of it.

    Hope you feel better soon.

    Brst wishes
