Hi, I have recently had the results from my lumpectomy but don't understand them. I don't know what the numbers mean and what span the numbers are from. Is it 8 out of 100 or 8 out of 10 is that good or bad?

Lymph nodes 0/2, ER8, PR8, NPI 3.4

The margins on the 20mm grade 2A IDC tumour were posterior 0.3mm (which didn't seem much of a margin to me) , and inferior 1.5mm are these big enough margins????

A tumour sample has now gone for an OncoDX test and I'm waiting to see if I need chemo.

Can anyone shed any light on these results, I've looked in the pathology handbook but can't see references to them.

Thanks

  • Hi Kizzy57 welcome to the forum and I am sorry to hear about how confused that you are, and little wonder with all those letters and numbers.

Our Ask THE NURSE section is currently closed due to them being so much in demand just now, but if you wanted to call the helpline they have Nurses there who you could ask your questions to them as they may be in a better position to tell you what that all means.  08088080000.

  • I can answer some of it! Though you should have a chat through with your BCN or oncologist

ER is oestrogen positive and this shows how much the cancer was fed by oestrogen - 8 is the top of the scale

PR is progesterone, same as above and 8 is top of scale.

You have 0 cancer in the 2 lymph nodes that were remove

I'm not sure what NPI is.

Grade 2 is how aggressive it was - the scale is 1 - 3 with 1 being the least aggressive

If your surgeon is happy with the margins, then they are enough!

Looks like good pathology results to me.

With it being so high on the hormone receptor scale, it means it is very treatable with hormone therapy.

  • Hi

NPI is Nottingham Predictor index although most consultants use the Predict score now, they also seem to always note this factor. 3.4 and below is shown as low risk of recurrence.
