Hi folks, ask a silly question...mastectomy next week, day case...told I will wear hospital gown...but what do you wear on the top to come home in when you have two drains attached? Also, told to have a bag to carry drains around...do they pull? What bags have people used? The BCN showed me an example that looked ideal but my sewing skills are minimal. Thank you
To be honest (I’ve had 5 surgeries on my breast) I’ve been perfectly fine with them all , no pain at all , some discomfort , and went out for coffees with my drains in. I would give yourself a couple of weeks to make sure you are okay and there are no complications (rare but can happen) and if you are having your sentinel nodes checked that can be sore x
Very best wishes for next week xx
Hi IblodwinI’ve come home today, having had single mastectomy with mediate implant reconstruction yesterday.
I wore the same jogging bottoms home that I went in with, worked out the compression socks would fit comfortably underneath them. With a sleeveless button down top which I could feed the drain and tube through the armholes so it was in the outside of my top and put in the drain bag I got from Drain Dollies as a gift. I only have one drain but don’t see why that wouldn’t work with two, whether on the same side or either side.
Now at home with the pyjamas I bought to take in but didn’t wear, having done the same thing with the sleeve and the bag, lying on my pile of pillows topped with the v shaped one so I’m semi upright. Husband packed off the spare room this evening!
At the moment I don’t have any pain or particular discomfort but earlier I did feel a bit wobbly, presumably from the anaesthetic. Only taking paracetamol for now but have codeine if needed.
I’m not one for sitting around but I know I’ll have to take it easy for a couple of weeks, limiting exercise to the arm exercises and maybe a short gentle walk or two. If you have someone to walk with you, or to drive you, and you feel up to going out for a while, go for it. Feeling good is just as much a part of the recovery as being sensible.
Wishing you all the best for your surgery next week xx
