Hi all,

Ive been told I have to self isolate for ten days before surgery. My surgeon said ‘within reason’ when he told me, but it does seem a bit unclear. My kids are due back at school tomorrow and I’m not sure how best to be isolated unless I stay in my room at home. Anyone done this? How did you manage and what advice were you given?

Thanks

Ruby xx

  • I'm surprised it was possible in a household. Not so bad if you've got more than one bathroom, I suppose, but not every house has two bathrooms.  I certainly only have the one bathroom, but do have another loo Slight smile

  • I was told to isolate for a week,  then surgery was postponed!   ( For other  reason). I’m lucky in some respects because I live alone, so apart from boredom it’s relatively easy.  I did go to click and collect drive through, with a mask on, I felt was reasonable, needed food and couldn’t get a delivery slot.

Covid is a real risk,  I worked in care homes all through, as agency HCA and of course I got it it in the very first wave.  April 2020.   Vaccinated at front of the que, as never  want to go through any of that again,  personal Health or working with it!

All any of us can do, is our best, and what we think is right.
Are the kids doing tests at school?

best of luck with your surgery

  • Seems excessive. I had covid test on Sat pm prior to surgery on a Tues and whole house had to isolate. 2.5/3 days seems to be the norm. Worth double checking.

  • Hi I was lucky because I was able to stay at a friends house that was unoccupied, mainly because only one bathroom, no other toilet and I didn’t want to stay in the bedroom for a week, also it was boiling that week so. As you said it’s totally impractical for a family household with children in school and a husband or partner in work. It also said husband/partner would have to sleep in different room.

I have a Covid test booked for the Friday before surgery (three days before surgery). I’m not in a particularly high risk area but I do have two kids, now at school and my husband at home. I’m going to speak to nurses today and see what they say but I do want to keep as safe as I can as I’d hate to have the surgery delayed.

I am lucky that I can sleep in a different room and  have use of a bathroom but ten days will be tough going.

    Thanks for all your replies,

  • Hi Jane,I am a day infront of you, surgery Thursday, seems to me everyone has different rules on isolating ,maybe it,s something to do with where you live and how covid is doing in your area, the covid station at hospital gave me paper work re isolating, was suppose to have my opp last week so was isolating, then it got cancelled and re booked for this Thursday,I have just carried on isolating.

    good luck on Fri

  • Good luck to you too! It’s all a bit surreal! Will be good to get it all over! Wish they would knock me out now and wake me up in 6 months time. Good luck will keep in touch xx

  • Will keep an eye out for your post, post opp to see how you got on,I tend to focus on what’s going to happen in a step by step approach,so beyond surgery on Thurs.I will be checking out which hormone tabs they will put me on,either that or radiotherapy, which ever comes first.

    xx

  • I had surgery last week. I was told to exercise “extreme social distancing” (or something like that) for 2 weeks before, so beging super careful but not complete self isolation. But after I had my ore surgery Covid text, the household had to completely isolate.  Best of luck

Hi Whitestar so you have a date brilliant . Isolating at this time is hard when we need people around us. I was terrified of catching covid as it's a delay of 4 weeks in our hospital if you are positive. Nevertheless, test was negative. I'm so glad you will have your operation this week I have been thinking about you . My mood improved as soon as I woke up ! My operation took 7 hours and my daughter was worried  as I had told her ring in about  3 hours , so warn your family by the time you have had your surgery and woken up and spent some time in recovery it might be quite a few hours have passed.  Bilateral mastectomy does take some time!  Best wishes for Friday X
