Hi all,

Ive been told I have to self isolate for ten days before surgery. My surgeon said ‘within reason’ when he told me, but it does seem a bit unclear. My kids are due back at school tomorrow and I’m not sure how best to be isolated unless I stay in my room at home. Anyone done this? How did you manage and what advice were you given?

Thanks

Ruby xx

    Hi

I was told I would have to socially distance for 2 weeks before surgery and then the 3 days before, our household would all have to isolate.

Perhaps speak to your breast care nurse for clarification?

Thanks for replying. My letter from the hospital and surgeon says to self isolate for ten days but I will definitely speak to the nurses. The household isolating would be a total nightmare so I think I’ll find a way of isolating myself. I’ll call tomorrow.

    Thank you

Something else to stress about isn't it!

I'm sure the nurses will help you, hope you get it sorted and your op goes well xx

  • Gosh I’m getting surgery on Friday, and tomorrow

im having blood sampling and covid test done and then i have to isolate until Friday. 10 days seems a bit excessive. I have just been being careful up until now but wasn’t told by surgeon to isolate! Hope you get it sorted out xx

  • I had Covid test 3 days prior to surgery, then to isolate until surgery.  I live alone so it wasn't an issue. Presumably the 10 days relates to those who aren't required to have a Covid test.

If a mum, with young kids in particular, I would suggest contacting either GP or Breast Care Nurse and ask (demand) a Covid test the day before your surgery, therefore minimising the need to isolate for only 24 hrs!  I think that's essential in such circumstances.  The diagnosis is more than enough stress, in my opinion  Slight smile

I can't imagine how members of a family, living in same house, with children at school, can possibly isolate unless one can enlist the  help of another adult.

  • Yes chocdrops experience is what happens in my neck of the woods too, PCR test 3 days before then the whole house hold isolates. But! A friend had a non cancer related op a couple of months ago and the whole household were told to isolate for 2 weeks!!!! I’d ask for clarification too x

  • Maybe the 10 days is linked to the area you are in, maybe covid cases are high? I was only told to self-isolate between covid test and operation but that was back when we were in full lockdown, so risks may be higher now with everything opening up.

Like others, it wasn't an issue for me as no kids plus we had been isolating the entire time I was going through chemo so it didn't make much of a difference to us!

  • That's just so 'over the top' and unnesscessary, to say nothing of the practicalities, when Covid tests are available

Even for me, being on my own, 2 weeks isolation would feel totally unnecessary.  I'd even pay for my own test, rather than do 2 weeks 'time'!!!  LOL

I'm sure it's all to save money, with no regard for the implications to the patient.  When I was nursing,  'Patient First' was the theme.  'Holistic Care' was another theme, which I regarded as so important.  Nowadays, the theme seems to be '£££ signs' all the time, almost regardless of the best for the patient.  I'm pleased to be out of it (retired) now although I miss it, from the days when it was 'Holistic Care'

    Sign of  the changes, eh?

  • Totally agree with all of that, it was a hysterectomy she was having and she’s two kids, it was a nightmare!

  • Hi I had my op on 23rd of July and I had to isolate for 7 days before, I was told that I had to stay 2 metres away from anyone in my household use a different bathroom and basically be on my own away from anyone for a week, I was booked in for a Covid test 72 hrs before. But it would be very difficult with children of school age.
