Hi. I'm going to have a breast reduction op on both sides as I have cancer on one side. This was offered as I have very large boobs and it was felt that radiotherapy would work better if my boobs were smaller.
I'm really pleased with this treatment plan. However I can't find anything online about breast reduction surgery as a cancer treatment. Any articles relate to lumpectomies, mastectomy or post op reconstruction.
I wondered if anyone on the forum has had the procedure I'm due to have? Thanks in anticipation
Hi , my husband has cancer , that's why I'm on macmi6bit I have actually had this surgery.
I had very uneven breasts and had it on one , 33yrs ago .
It is major surgery and is painful , sorry no point in lying about it but if you are sensible it's a quick recovery and scars heal quickly . I'm sure they've explained the process so no point me going over it . Good luck with OP
Wendy
Hi is yr surgery a theraputic mammoplasty with reduction on other side. If so I am 9 days post op from this surgery. I have not had my final results from surgery yet but in view of healing I am doing very well. I was large breasted and had a small area of dcis and my tumour was 11mm. I was kept in overnight and allowed home next day. I have been very strict with myself and rested and done my exercises. I have slept against a v shaped pillow, and slept really well. I had no drains, and I have not needed any pain relief. You must be very strict with yourself and rest. My swelling is next to none now, my bruising is now on end yellow stage, my sutures should start to dissolve next week. I did not know radiotherapy worked better on smaller breasts so that has given me some reassurance. Any questions fire away and I will do my best to answer them for you xx
Shaz 52 thank you so much, that's really reassuring. Surgeon has described it as double reduction with cancer taken out. I will look up therapeutic mammoplasty. Good to hear you are recovering well. My surgery isn't til 1st October, having 2 surgeons, I boob each! I'm currently a 40G so not sure how many cup sizes I can go down. A D cup would be fab for sure. I was gobsmacked when she suggested reduction- however I am really happy with the treatment plan.
Thank you Wendy, that's very reassurring. Good advice, thanks again.
hi, I was given a therapeutic mammoplasty with reduction on the other side as an option, and yes, I was told that could be better for radiotherapy as basically it would be a smaller area for radiotherapy to blast. However, I was also given a more straightforward lumpectomy as an alternative and I went for that as it was less invasive surgery (1hour in theatre v around 4hours). I had surgery on Monday and if the margins end up not being clear then I will have the mammoplasty the next time. Hope this helps and good luck
Your very welcome, I to had two surgeons. A breast surgeon who dealt with removing the tumour and a plastics surgeon who dealt with shaping my breast after. When they advised both breasts at the same time, I thought will I cope, but you do, with plenty of rest, follow all the advice they give you. If they did one breast I would be looking at surgery again 6+ months down the line. So better one recovery really. I have looked at my breasts with the support of my bcn and its early days but I am pleased. xx
Hi. Thank you. I'm finding a bit more information about it now. I sincerely hope you don't have the trauma of more surgery. At present I'm coping much better than I thought I would, but it's such an emotional roller coaster. I hate to think of the amount of people who go through the whole experience.
Brilliant, yes I'm rather intrigued as to what my currently droopy boobs will look like. As you say having the 2nd done after a long gap would be horrid. I cannot imagine how awful having such different sizes would be , and managing that situation. You've inspired me thank you again.
Hi Elephant lady
I had a double breast reduction in November for cancer in left breast ... Overall I had a really good experience great team looking after me ...the results where better then I hope for hardly any pain and their used Pico devices for drainage which I think help a lot.
Your welcome. When is your surgery. I have a wound check tomorrow with my bcn. I will be 12 days post op. I fully understand I am not healed yet, you need to heal inside and out. My bruising has nearly faded, I still have swelling but it's early days yet. Be kind to yourself, rest, drink plenty of water, this can help to keep it free of infection. I have slept against a v shaped. Hopefully my sutures should start to dissolve next week. How big is the area they are removing. xx
