Eyelashes

I completed my breast cancer treatment in December 2019. I had a lumpectomy followed by chemo and then more surgery to remove all lymph nodes under my arm. I finished with radio therapy. All my hair grew back quite quickly and I was relieved when my eyebrows grew back as I'd felt a bit faceless without them.

I didn't really think much about whether my eyelashes had grown back until this summer when I have had really dry, itchy eyes. I feel as if they did at first grow back, but are now breaking off at a few mm long. I talked to the Boots optician in March and she recommended eye drops 3 times  day and eye gel at night. This is temporarily soothing but the discomfort is getting worse and I constantly feel as if I have something in one or other eye which is scratching my eye ball. I have never worried a great deal about my appearance but feel I need eyelashes to protect my eyes.

I have read that coconut oil  may help them to grow back. Does anyone have any experience which may help? I know this is a minor inconvenience compared to others.

  • Might b worth trying gp or optician, might b blethoritis which can b treated with preservative free eye drops and a warmed eye pad to help lids produce more oil.

Thank you.  I have the eye drops from the optician but haven't tried a warmed eye pad.

  • Hi - are you on Tamoxifen, as that can have an affect on your eyes?

  • Hi!

I have had issues with my eyes feeling ‘scratched’. Optician checked, said I had dry eyes and that the ducts were blocked. Recommended warm eye mask and massaging my eyelid using a cotton bud….rolling from crease to edge of eye. Helps express the ducts. Hope that makes sense! You can also get a eyelash serum from no.7 in boots…I will check what it is called tomorrow. I also found a moisturising mascara….I’ll track down that name too!

  • Agreed about going to optician to get checked out. On the eyelashes, I have been using UKLash (it's a serum) for lashes since they started growing again after chemo ad they have done quite well and are long and healthy. My eyebrows are still not back completely so maybe the serum has made a difference to my eyelashes. My eyebrows are very light anyway so I don't really notice them so much.

There are a lot of lash serums out there, some more expensive than others!

Thank you, I will have a chat with the pharmacist at Boots. It does make sense!

Not currently but perhaps it has a long term effect.

  • Okay….I used Revitalash at the beginning….very effective for me!

More recently, lash serum L’Oreal, and no. 7 age defying mascara….eyes look instantly more youthful! Seems light and effective!

My eyes are important…so I have spent some time on this….Revitalash, was fabulous at getting my eyelashes growing,,,,I was desperate though! A light weight nourishing mascara is important but I find a lot of mascaras are heavy and ‘ claggy’. If you find anything more fabulous please let us know! My eyes are the door to my soul. Xx
