Hi everyone, I hope you are all well. I just wanted to ask for those of you that had the dreaded docetaxel, whether you suffered from a sore throat after? My throat feels very irritated and red raw, my stomach also the last few days has definitely been irritated (diarrhoea), I just wondered how long I can expect this to last?? I’m on day 6 of my first Docetaxel cycle and actually feeling pretty good apart from these SE

xx

  • I can't speak to the sore throat as I didn't have that on Docetaxel, but I generally found days 2-7 were the worst in terms of side effects, with lots of improvement from day 8ish onwards.

Do mention it to the chemo nurses next time you speak to them, and/or phone your chemo helpline if it doesn't improve in a few days.

  • Thanks  I am going in for a Picc flush this afternoon so will definetely mention it to them x

  • Hi there, I had a really sore throat and mouth when having docetaxel...turned out to be really bad oral thrush. Something to rule out?

  • Yes! DH developed one too at the same time (day 6 after T#1) and we couldn't understand where on earth we might have picked up a cold. But his disappeared and mine hasn't. I'm now day 11 and it still feels the same. All my mucous membranes are inflamed, inside and out - my nose keeps bleeding, my eyes are watering, I have cold sores and my ears hurt. The diarrhoea did improve after 8 days. I also ended up on antibiotics for an underlying infection after a prolonged raised temperature. It's horrid, isn't it?

It was quite wonderful not to have the sickness of the EC cycles though.

  • Thanks  nurse had a look and decided it is thrush so gave me some mouthwash and I already started the tablets this morning, so should all be better in a few days, so glad I asked about it x

  • I would speak to your chemo nurses as I think you should be starting to feel better by now x

  • I rang Acute Care yesterday when my temperature was still going up to 37.5*C with only 1 day left of antibiotics, but they weren't bothered about the temperature or the other symptoms. That's a good idea though, I probably should ring the BCN tomorrow and see what she says. I'm not struggling now, just inconvenienced. Thank you x

  • With my first Docetaxel I had a sore throat and swollen tongue and swollen glands and an irritated stomach. I rang the helpline and got mouthwash and also Nystan drops- they were amazing! I had thrush like symptoms in my mouth but I think that is what was causing the stomach irritation too so the drops helped with both. I started taking the drops the day after my second docetaxel treatment and didn’t have any of the symptoms I had with the first one. Take care. Xxx

  • this sounds exactly like what I have. When I spoke to the chemo nurse yesterday she thought it might be thrush but I don’t have any white patches it’s just my tongue and mouth are very swollen and irritated, the thrush medication doesn’t seem to be doing anything, I will definitely ask about the drops for next time as having a sore mouth is pretty miserable x

  • I had the same.It IS miserable, isn't it? I don't think it's thrush, just general soreness of all mucous membranes, inside and out. I've been using Listerine Zero, the alcohol-free mouthwash that doesn't sting. It did help. I'm on day 12 now and mine has improved in the last couple of days. Hopefully yours will too. Fingers crossed
