Realistically how soon will I be able to drive after mastectomy?
Hi Greencyclist, this depends so much on how you are feeling and healing. I was told i could not drive for 6 weeks after my mastectomy. I started driving after 3 weeks but more due to necessary than wanting to,i lived in the sticks and kids needed to get to school. I think if you feel well enough just start with small journeys and don,t over do it. You will know if you are ready or not, just don,t go at it like a bull at a gate.A mastectomy takes months to heal, everything has to knit back together so don,t be surprised if you get twinges for months is does not always mean you are over doing it, its just the healing process, trust me you will know if you have done to much and then you rest up.Take care x
I drove after 3.5 weeks. I was told I didn't need a GP to confirm it, but I could legally drive as long as I could wear a seatbelt, do an emergency stop and wasn't getting drowsiness/dizziness from any pain pills.
I probably could have driven earlier actually, but because I was in pain when I was a passenger in DH's car, I assumed it would be as bad in my own. It turned out that with a right mastectomy, being the driver was much less painful than being a passenger.
Thank you all for your responses, I have more idea now. It’s a bit extreme to think of selling the car then!
