Treatment plan

Tomorrow is the day I see the consultant, who last week said we would discuss treatment plans after biopsy..  Last week I felt they were trying to prepare me for bad news. But also realise this is a team approach and many things need to done before they talk to patients. Did you have any question you wished you had asked but didn’t?  I’m at the beginning and wonder how long will it be, for treatments to be started and done with, recovery etc.  Are we talking weeks months years?
I’ve had moments of calm and practicality and moments so tears.  I feel confused and just what my boob or even both of them cut off ASAP.
I’m scared about how I will cope with recovery as I live alone.  I’m terrified

  • It's so hard isn't it. I do hope your consultant appointment goes well. If you've not been yet, try and note down your questions and concerns and don't be shy about asking them everything! Get them to explain it until you understand. (Says she... I find it difficult to do this but it's what I aim for!)

The treatments and timeline will depend heavily on what your situation is but I think normally it's months rather than years for treatment. Recovery (especially mentally) can take a long time however, as it's a big life adjustment.

Take it slow and give yourself time to let things sink in. I find I feel very differently about things from one week to the next. I also live alone and have coped with surgery and chemo ok so far.

Hopefully your hospital will connect you with a Breast Care Nurse team who you can phone any time with questions/worries.

Best of luck and huge hugs

  • Incredibly hard to take it all in and prep for, especially as we all feel so emotional. I have a notes section in my phone and as I think of something I want to know I tap it in until I have a list. Then at the end of the consultation I say right! Let me check my question list before I go, make sure I haven’t forgotten anything and that’s always been accepted very well. As Radge says the questions you ask tend to be dependant on your diagnosis. When I went for my consultation to get all the results I wasn’t allowed anyone in with me but I had a breast care nurse there who had already made me notes of the important points. After my consultation was over I was taken to a small sitting room in an office and she said right, come on let’s look again and ask me anything, that was brilliant so I hope you are offered the same. I’m being treated at Wycombe and they’ve been honestly amazing. Good luck, let us know how you get on xx

  • Hi.  I too live alone and my best friend has been staying since June and my mastectomy    however I shall be going in again Tuesday for all my lymph nodes to be removed and I will be back to being on my own.  Please stay in touch.  We a need support. Xxz

  • Well the diagnosis was ( Invasive Lobular)Breast Cancer,  I was expecting* that since biopsy.   I’m emotionally frazzled

  • Your bunting post was the best ever. Do take advantage of the Breast Cancer Nurse/s available to you. There is also "Ask an Expert" service on this site, which I've used more than once and the responses are quicker (amazingly).
