Delayed HER2 result midlands hospital

Hello everyone,

I am only at the beginning of my cancer journey. Found my lump on 21st June after having an all clear screening mammogram earlier in February this year. I have invasive Ductal cancer, grade 2 ER+.

I still don’t know my HER2 status. My surgery is booked but is subject to this result.

I have had repeated failed promises of HER2 result dates. My breast care nurse is on holiday. The breast care team have not been responding to answering machine messages. Having lost my rag today after phone contact was established and asking nurses to find out what’s wrong,  I have been told the machine that does the HER2 tests had broken and there is a back log of HER2 tests and this was the “first the team had known about it”.  The lead breast care nurse told me her team is trying it’s best but is short staffed with people working from home due to Covid. They tell me the HER2 results are “out of their hands” (another hospital), they tell me they still cannot estimate when I will get my results.

I can’t understand why patients have not been informed of this delay and reason for delay. I can’t understand why the date for my results cannot be estimated based on my position in the backlog and machine output.

The lead care nurse told me today her nurse was upset after a call with me earlier today. But they do care about me.

I think I will have to reset my expectations about how  this cancer journey is going to be.

I am in for a rough ride!

  • Hi CotswoldFreddie

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. How frustrating for you waiting on your HER2 results. Hopefully you’ll have them soon.

Wishing you the best of luck with your cancer journey.

    Best wishes

  • Daisy thank you replying. It means a lot.

  • Sorry to hear about delay in getting your results, as if the waiting isn’t bad enough without having to chase them!

Hopefully, moving forward your ‘ride’ will not be as rough as you imagine.

    Sending good wishes x

  • Hi CotswoldFreddie, I feel your pain, I have been in the same queue with Birmingham Lab and HER2 results.  My biopsy was 29th May and only last week did I get results only to be told inconclusive after 3 times of testing. I kept chasing too and told they had problems with their processes! And again my hospital had no control over when the results would come through.

Thankfully they have agreed to go ahead with my surgery now (booked for next Thursday) and they will test for HER2 from sample taken of what they remove at surgery.

keep pushing, I know it’s not nice but have to do it,  I also reported it to PALS and asked them to get involved chasing the Lab.

fingers crossed yours come through soon

  •  Chelle , this is exactly what I was hoping for with my message.  I’m with the Warwick team that get their results from b’ham and I realised there were bound to be other women with the same issue.  I am going to report it to Warwick PALS today also. Are you with Warwick?  I wonder how many of us are affected in this area and whether this is getting the right focus? My breast care team are not filling me with confidence. I’m not an expert but getting this test result seems to be critical to our treatment. If the b’ham lab isn’t operating correctly our tests should be transferred to avoid delay and uncertainty for us. I am happy your surgery is going ahead and that you are happy about that. Mines booked for 4th August and I think they intend to go ahead with or without HER2 result. But I don’t think it’s acceptable this is happening. I wish you luck for your surgery and thank you for your message. Chat with you on the other side!
All my love to you Freddie

  • MrsPolly thank you for your reply.

im disappointed I’ve just started my journey and I already don’t trust the care system!

thank you for your thoughts. It feels great when people reply to wish you well. I will be doing the same for others.

    all my love to you

  • Hi Freddie, I'm not with Warwick, I'm with Wolverhampton.  My allocated nurse has been great and returned all my calls, don't have concerns with her or my surgeon but frustrated they have no control over the lab turnaround of results.

They are doing my surgery without my results and will run HER2 tests again on a sample from what they remove in surgery.  Just hope I am not waiting another 7 weeks after surgery for results again.

    Hope you hear soon xx

  • Hi that is happening to me to. My surgery is on 3rd August.  I have not had my HER result. They are running a sample on what they remove in surgery. I am confused thou because when I spoke to my plastics consultant about my surgery which is a theraputic mammoplasty she only asked if I was okay with having radiotherapy after. I am with Birmingham.

  • My surgeon has said if HER2 positive result then will need 18 rounds of Chemo before radiotherapy.  Should have been Chemo before surgery if needed but because of delay already and results not clear they are opting for surgery first.

  • It's really quite confusing. I do have another area of pre cancerous cells, both areas are small about 10mm or less, my bcn advised she wouldn't be surprised if they had shrunk. Do you know if yours is hormone positive, mine is er 8/8 and i am on letrozole because of delay in surgery. What ever treatment is needed you have to work with, mine is grade 2.  But would of preferred to know before surgery xx
