hi there I am looking for some up to date information on using the mastectomy side for taking blood,be,blood transfusions. My mum has been a very unfortunate lady,in some ways and very fortunate in others. She has been diagnosed and treated for several different types of cancer including breast cancer.Recently she had to undergo major back surgery which then resulted into her needing to have bowel surgery as well. Her veins were collapsing on the good side and they were having trouble getting the necessary bloods so they used the mastectomy side? So I am enquiring in her behalf if anybody knows the up to date information. On having bloods taken, blood pressure ,infusions taken from the mastectomy side, she did have lymph nodes removed .
I hope somebody can point me in the correct direction so that I can advise her accordingly.
many thanks for taking the time to read my post
Hi , when I am not a breast cancer pt I am a vascular access practitioner so have some answers
if we come across a pt like your mum we do a risk assessment 1 is test needed or is there another way of getting the information? 2 is there a piece of equipment or more experienced person available to try on good arm if there isn’t a alternative we ask the doc in charge of pt. if we can use mastectomy side we also speak tO the pt
