Hi I have a video consultation on thurs to discuss genetic testing. Has anyone else had genetic testing for breast cancer and tell me about what to expect?

Thank you.

    Hi,

I had genetic testing at the start of my treatment. After the initial consultation over the phone (where they discussed the implications of the test etc) they sent me a blood test request form which I took to the hospital to have the blood taken when I had my regular ones done. The results took about 3 months to come back.

    Hope that helps xx

    Hi there

Yes I was referred for this also as my mum also had BC in her early 40s (I was recently diagnosed at 39)

Was an in person consultation with the nurse explaining the reasons and possible outcomes behind it- she explained that it’s rare to be diagnosed as positive to the faulty genes

My Oncologist had pushed for the results to come back within 4-6 weeks as it could affect my final surgery plan

Results came back negative this week (so a huge weight off my mind for my young children and my sister/ niece at least)

    Hope that helps x

  • They just sent bloods off for me. The genetic test centre got in touch and I had to fill out a form with family history of cancer. They then went ahead with the testing and I got a letter about 3 months later with the results.

They don't just test for BC, they test for about 8 genetic markers that give an indication of other potential cancers too. My genetic centre did anyway - assume it will be the same one.

The implications of the test weren't discussed with me, maybe because I requested it!
