Cancer remaining in the margin so another operation

Saw the consultant today just over two weeks since my lumpectomy and auxiliary node dissection.  Unfortunately there are cancerous cells in the margin near the pectoral muscle so I have to have the operation repeated.  Apparently he did a muscle shave but it was not enough.  I feel rather fed up but there is nothing I can do about it.  I was hoping to go on a family holiday but won't be able to do that.  I guess I have to be grateful to be getting treatment that may extend my life.

Hi Thirds welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about what has happened for you. I can appreciate how frustrating that all is for you especially how you had hoped to get away on holiday but hopefully you can still be well enough to go away on holiday, there just might be a delay in that happening.

What has happened to you needing more surgery is not uncommon sadly, but you are absolutely right in that they are doing that to make sure thta no Cancer is left. Have they given you any exercises to do after your surgery and how are you managing with these?

  • Thank you for your response.  Yesterday was a shock.  Feeling much better about it all now.  Missing a holiday is nothing in the scheme of things.  Yes I was given exercises and have been very diligent about them but I have developed a seroma and one of the questions that I wanted to ask yesterday was what to do about them as they are not that easy now.  It was frantic there with all the clinics running late and I literally got told that I had to do it all again and that was it.  I waited over an hour for a less than five minute appointment. I felt so sorry as they were full to overflowing with people.  I am going to get on with it now and stop feeling sorry for myself! Thank you again. for taking the time to reply to me.

Hi Thirds you are not feeling sorry for yourself so take that thought right out of your head. I accept what you are saying about them being busy, but this is your life, not theirs so they need to make time whether they are busy or not because you are important. What is happening for you is scarey and you also need time to ask any questions that you have.

If you have a Seroma sometimes these need drained. Is there a Breast Clinic that you can call to speak to a breast care nurse and maybe they could see you to look at that Seroma. Keep doing the exercises though and dont let them put you off as you do need someone to have a look at that for you to see if it does need drained or not.

  • Thank you for your reply.  I did say to the surgeon yesterday that I thought that I had developed a seroma and he asked if it is painful and I said no.  He then said "when I redo the operation I will take a look and drain it if necessary.  If it can disperse on its own that is best".  I am doing the exercises but I do find the creeping up the wall is painful.  I have to be patient and wait for the operation now.  Thank you for your help.
