Is anyone else finding that they have a very weak arm after op on Breast, despite doing all the exercises as suggested ? If not full recovery to normal mobility, (as before the op)what should be done about it ? N.B. I should add that I had to have implant, then got haematoma so actually had 2 ops in all.
Hi MissHope60 - it took quite a long time for my arm to feel less sore after my mastectomy and node clearance and I phoned up my BC nurse who said if you persevere with the exercises it should gradually improve. She thought that two weeks was early days.I was worrying that I wouldn’t be ready for RT but after a month it was much better. Keep going and best wishes for a significant improvement.
Can you let us know what the Physio suggests ?
Sorry to hear that you feel there’s no improvement - physio is a good idea. Did you experience cording under your arm? I’m now 18 months later and after RT diagnosed with lymphodoema in hand and arm. It didn’t happen when I had mastectomy, node clearance and reconstruction on the other side ( 20years ago) so I think it must have been the RT. Now I have a daily regime of more excercises designed to move the lymph fluid!
Hi, I had a lump and some lymph nodes removed in March 21, followed by radiotherapy in April. I had cording fairly soon after op despite doing all the recommended exercises. Was referred for physio which has helped the cording. But in June developed lymphoedema in my hand and now required to wear a compression glove and do daily exercises as well. Despite this, I would say doing the exercises has probably helped the cording and aching shoulder joint from becoming worse.
Hi sayan25
Thank you for the information and encouragement, I will let you know how I get on with the physio on Thursday.
Hi sayan25 - I’m so relieved to hear that someone else has experienced the same outcome as me! Are you following the same six excercises recommended in the cancercare booklet which was issued to me by the nurse in the lymphodoema clinic I wonder? Do you find that they help? I’m worried that the fluid seems to be accumulating in my arm. Also, having looked on U tube I found some more detailed excercises which logically worked from neck through shoulder, then arm followed by hand and then back in reverse order. They seem to ease the problem a bit.
Have you been shown how to do any simple lymphatic drainage? Do you do it before or after the other excercises? My problem is that the strokes are meant to be towards the other armpit ( where the healthy lymph nodes should be) but I’ve had those removed also and I don’t know where my healthy lymph nodes are! Also have you found the glove impractical? Especially when because of Covid we are supposed to be washing or sanitising our hands at every opportunity!
Sorry I’ve asked you so many questions but you are the first person I’ve come across who has recently been diagnosed with lymphodoema like mine.
