I have a wide local excision booked for 29 June with sentinel node biopsy in my left breast. I am also left handed. Any advice please on what not to do with left hand for first few days then weeks after surgery.  Advice is to limit weight etc but not sure how much and when that means. Especially as I live alone with minimal assistance.

  • I also had sentinel node biopsy on dominant (right) side. I am really active and lift heavy things all the time but I did take it easy for the first few weeks. I was a bit sore from the WLE and also my shoulder was pretty stiff. They will give you exercises to do from the day after the operation so do these. I had read that after about 4-6 weeks you're OK to start lifting heavier things again and I did give myself that time. I also got a lot more stiff during my 2 weeks of radiotherapy so took it a bit more easy then. Now, 3.5 months on, I am not treating it any differently. I notice more pain and slight swelling in my breast if I've done a lot and I still have mild cording but it is not stopping me from doing anything. My oncologist said the swelling and pain can last for many many months. I'm very outdoorsy so if I cut or scratch my right hand/arm (which happens often), then I put germolene and a plaster on it straight away.
