Hi, I am having a single mastectomy on the 16th of June. The other breast will be removed at a later date. I just wondered if there were any ladies here who could offer me any tips or advice? Anything which helped whilst in hospital or you wish you had known before etc. I have chosen to not have any reconstruction. Thank you.

  • Hi

I don't drive but get behind the wheel and see where seatbelt sits ..ouch ! Not advisable I would say . Your op site needs time to heal and whilst we're talking about that try to take a peak at op site asap after op so it doesn't become scary in your mind . Just a quick peak is so reassuring .

If you vsit Macmillan site  I think you can download their organiser with space for appointments etc also a handy spot for putting down questions you want to ask like when can you drive ?

I write down every time I think about one then at end of appointment go thru to see if they have answered my queries the team won't mind they want you to feel comfortable .

I only had 8 days before op do most of my questions were asked in that time just as well I saw surgeon 4 times in that period . Lol Laughing

Very good point about the seatbelt! Lots of things I haven’t thought about. I was diagnosed on the 6th May so I’ve had time but my mind is so jumbled. My mum said the same thing to me today, make sure I take a little peak at the site so I’m not afraid or wondering. Also to show my husband so I don’t feel like it’s something I have to work up to, just show it straight away. An organiser would be great! I will have a look. I have been writing questions down in my phone but each appointment is like a whirlwind so I do forget things and end up phoning back afterwards ha ha. I really appreciate you taking your time to answer my questions. I feel better! Thank you xx

With regards to the heart pillow, you can get them from Jens Friends, you just pay for postage.  With regards to driving, you need to check with your insurance company and surgeon.  They usually say as long as you are comfortable changing gears and doing an emergency stop you should be ok.

  • Have a browse around the threads lots of interesting ones some with lots of info and some  very chatty ( Awake thread ) worth a look around and jump in wherever you want you will be welcomed . Lots of support on all the threads .

If you want to make sure your question or remark goes to a specific person then use @ immediately followed by name of that person i.e. it appears highlighted click on it and that person receives notification

I'm off to bed now haircut in morning .

By the way it would be more worrying if you're head wasn't all over the place

Thank you Lesley! I have just had a look for the page. What an amazing thing they’re doing! I have messaged to order one. I will ask my nurse about the driving xx

  • No. Don't drive, for God's sake. You need to heal first. What you have to be capable of doing is operating the handbrake at least. I love driving but know I am not up to it at present.

Thank you. Something I haven’t even thought about! Good job it’s summer so I can chuck my little girl in the garden to play. We live in a little village so drive everyday. I hope you’re healing well. Take care xx

  • This morning up bright and early. Had wound check with Nurse, after those drains and passed with flying colours. I have had probs moving arms with my former ease, and she checked them too.

  • Glad all  0k doing the arm exercises will soon sort out your arm movement Blush

  • Hi - do you have a link to the arm exercises ? I have seen them once but given no info today. I meant to ask but was so delighted things were at last looking good I forgot ! Nurse wasn't requiring much height, but I know I am making daily improvements. Couldn't get up the stairs of the hospital 2 days ago but now can. Feeling chuffed instead of puffed !!
