Hi All,

Hope everyone is OK!

I am 42 years old and was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2020 and have since had BCS to remove it which was successful, although they found 1 of the 3 lymph nodes that they removed had signs of cancer.  My cancer was graded as grade 1, hormone positive, HER2 negative.

I've been asked to consider chemotherapy before having radiotherapy and hormone tablets and when the doctor went through the numbers I am 87% likely to survive beyond 10 years if I don't have any treatments, another 4% can be added for radiotherapy and another 3-4% added if I had chemotherapy.

I'm in the process of thinking about the information given but am struggling to justify going through chemo with all of the side affects for just a 3-4% better chance when my survival chance is pretty high anyway.

Would anybody mind letting me know their thoughts on this, it's so difficult trying to make a decision on this and I would really appreciate any input from anyone in a similar situation?

Thank you so much for your help.

  • Hi Min79

Sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer last September and had 8 cycles of chemo, four of AC and four of Taxol.  I was lucky in that I didn’t have too many side effects. I was given medication to counteract any side effects if I needed them and I found that I hardly had to take them. I did feel sick a few times but I took a anti-sickness tablet and found that it helped. I also lost my hair, eyebrows and eyelashes and got some neuropathy in my hands and feet.

If you do decide to go down the chemo route you will have plenty of support from your Onology team. You will be given phone numbers to contact them if you are feeling bad after chemo.

Wishing you all the best for your treatment.

    Best wishes

  • Hello

I'm sorry you have been thru this. I had 2 involved lymph nodes and my cancer was more aggressive than yours but what I do know is that I took everything they threw at me. You seem to have a good prognosis. I would however consider chemotherapy as even if you say it's only a few percentage points, it actually takes you up into the mid 90s as a percentage. That's with radiotherapy as well. Dont have any regrets that you tried everything you could to prevent a recurrence.

I would discuss with your breast cancer nurse.

    Love julie x

  • I'm a similar age to you and had ER+/PR+/HER- BC. Because it was on my chest wall, I had neoadjuvant chemo to shrink it first which was good because you know the chemo is working! Personally, I was always going to take everything they offered me. At such a young age, I want to do everything possible to make sure it doesn't come back. The chemo will get rid of any cells that might be circulating in your body.

Good luck with your decision. Chemo is tough, but manageable and your team will look after you and help you through it. I carried on working throughout

Hi min I was diagnosed with grade 1 stage 2b estrogen positive breast cancer in 2019 I also had micromets in one of my lymph nodes I was all set for having chemo but they decided to do the onco dx test first it's a test to see if chemo be of any benefit to your overall prognosis I scored 14 anything under 18 for people aged 50 or younger chemo is not recommended as the cancer has a low risk of recurrence could you ask your oncologist for the onco dx test I hope whatever you decide everything goes well for you best wishes to you x

Hi Lynne the onco type dx test is done by sending a sample of your breast tissue that is removed during surgery to america they look at 21 Genes in your tumour and score it from 0 to 100 anything under 18 if your under age 50 is considered low risk of recurrence and they will say chemo be of no extra benefit if your over age 50 anything under 25 is considered low risk of recurrence the result usually takes about 2 weeks I'm not sure though now how long it would take because of covid it's done for early stage estrogen  positive her2 negative breast cancer with cells in up to 3 lymph nodes hope that helps take care xx
