Aesthetic Flat Closure

Hi all, my operation date is coming up soon which was originally planned for a lumpectomy. It looks like some more lumps have been found and dark hints were dropped about maybe needing a mastectomy. Now my question is this: is there anyone out there who has had a mastectomy with an Aesthetic Flat Closure? I am in an FB group and everyone with an AFC seems to be in the US. Are surgeons in the UK doing this? I don't want fake silicone stuff and I don't want to go through a really long operation for a DEIP reconstruction although the idea of a free tummy tuck as a side benefit is not without its attractions. ;-)

  • 11 months later I am still unhappy about the lopsided look but what I really hate is I work in a swimming costume and have to use a prosthesis at work. I would still prefer to be flat both sides than this uni look or have a recon, but met my surgeon for the first time since my op yesterday who said I didn’t have enough tummy fat and they could only do a TUG (inner thigh recon), so then I would have obvious scars that my patients would see when I’m in the pool, on my leg (I presume that the would be uneven?). Strange they can cut your healthy leg up but won’t remove the other breast (which I am now waiting an ultrasound on because he felt more lumps, probably just cysts again but it does cause scanxiety).

Thank you for sharing you situation with me. I agree with you, it is strange that other healthy body parts can be cut to create a breast but a health breast not permitted, even though it would give my body  balance,  look symmetrical and reduce negative feelings.

It feels like  there is some underlying thought that having a breast is the overriding consideration, even if the person knows that is not the best option for themselves.

Like you,   I do not want additional scars, I know I do not want to be lopsided. I want to choose what my own body looks like (with in the cancer limitation) without extra months or years of persuding. It can't be right. I wonder if there is a petition or movement already happening. I don't think i can be the only one that feels this way.

I wish you all the very best of luck with the scan results. I do hope they come back clear and that you find the way to have the shape you are comfortable with.

  • Thank you. Liz O’Riordan was discussing this topic on her Instagram page a couple of days ago. Because your so large and have problems keep trying to push, I don’t understand why some women can on the NHS and some can’t. Good luck and I hope you get what you want. X

  • Look at my profile and towards the end you will see I was big breasted and did get a double mastectomy. I agree the implications of being lopsided are not good. I don't regret my double mastectomy and get the benefit of not having to wear a prostheses.

If you haven't already write to PALs, health watch and your local MP. Apart from physical health your mental health will be better, and you will save the NHS money, no mammograms and better back health.. I had a women surgeon she was great. Also double mastectomy more straight forward than a reduction so again money saving

    Good luck
