Hello everyone,

I'm Steph from the Community team, I hope you don't mind me posting here.

We've been asked to create a new thread for radiotherapy discussions this April, as the existing threads were getting a little long.

  • If you're looking for earlier discussions, you can find them in the Feb/Mar thread here.

  • You can find useful radiotherapy tips shared by members in an older thread here.

Please do let us know if you have any other threads you think would be useful to link here.

Thanks for the good wishes .  I’ve had 7 sessions so far and all seems to be going well.  And thanks for the tip to continue using cream after treatment.  It’s a good reminder that the effects carry on for several weeks.

Are you now finished completely with your treatment?  I hope you have found the transition back into normal life a smooth one.

  • Me too but I've lost the post op exercise booklet. Can anyone recommend some exercises on line? I was also told to use Aveeno -which I don't like particularly.

  • 5 sessions in 5 days that is starting next Wednesday.

  • Hepi, first session done today, all fine apart from the room being really cold.

My trust maintain they do not recommend using any cream and certainly not Aloe Vera. I’m going to stick with all the advice on here from all the lovely ladies and cream twice a day with aveeno, which I told the radiotherapy nurse. She said ..well I can’t stop you. Interesting how different hospital policies are. Fingers crossed for the next 9 sessions.

  • Hi All, how is everyone getting on with their rads? I've had 3 out of 10 (5 whole breast, 5 booster), all good so far though I have noticed very slight redness straight afterwards and also feels a bit swollen. Scar a more red too. I've also noticed hot flushes a bit more frequent. Nothing that is bothering me so far though which is great. I'm using Aveeno twice a day just to keep everything moisturised, which my radiotherapist was fine with though did say it wouldn't make any difference to whether a skin reaction would occur.

  • Morning all. Just catching up with all your posts after a busy few days. Hope the radiotherapy is going well for everyone.
     - more than half way through now! Hope the skin is holding up & the travel is still proving manageable.
, how strange that your team are advising against any cream. It is odd how different trust areas have different protocols & procedures. I think I would do like you & use something anyway! My clinic gave me Flamigel & so far it is doing the trick. The radiographer said today that my skin is looking good. Hoping it continuesFingers crossed

good to hear from you. Sorry you have had a late reaction but thanks for the tip. The radiographer did advise me at my planning meeting that any side effects/reaction could peak 10 days after the end of treatment. I wasn’t expecting that!

The breath holding is a funny one. I have also done yoga for years & the breath should be easy for me. I think I became very conscious of it the last few days & that seemed to make me feel that I couldn’t hold for long enough. I have started to close my eyes once the breath is in rather than watching the breath monitor & that had really helped. I have been assured that the machine will stop if I breathe out but I don’t really want to see what happens then!!
Good luck everyone & take care x

  • Hi

I have just had my first treatment today of fifteen sessions and I was also given Flamigel to apply 3 times a day.  I have been lucky and am getting my treatment with a private clinic due to my husband having health insurance through work. they advised me to organise a prescription for more, ready for when it runs out.

I was also informed that it is more often than not that reactions may happen around 2 weeks after treatment as the radiotherapy is still continuing to work on the body a good while after the last treatment.

I am not enjoying the breath holding part of it!

good luck all and stay strong xx

  • Yep, im having the same symptoms beat the breast! Felt tired today too, but I’m not giving in yet! My boob was burning hot last night. Kept it open to the fresh air for about 3 hours.

  • Cyprusfav, I  start my rad on Wednesday and no one told me about holding my breath. I've bought lots of Aveeno in anticipation. I 'm really worried now as I was at the start of chemo. Fingers crossed for your next 9 sessions. It'll be all over before you know it. Do you have to take AI's? I don't know which bothers me the most Rads or AI's? I'm starting to think that the op was the easiest to deal with. Good luck for your remaining sessions: ).

  • Hepi..Are they treating the right side for you? Maybe that’s why yiu haven’t had to practice it

Breath holding needed for left side to raise heart and lungs whilst being zapped. The treatment itself is pain free and over in minutes, try not to worry x

yes on tamoxifen.. it’s just pushing me through menopause quicker so systems were going to happen sooner or later anyway, so I’m finding the side effects bearable.
