I’ve been taking Tamoxifen for a month now and have been experiencing difficulty sleeping. The past week or so I’ve been waking up startled from an unsettling dream, then my minds racing. I’ve been having hot flushes too, not sure if these are waking me or I just notice them because I’m awake. My emotional state feels compromised with the lack of sleep and discomfort in my breast that’s still healing (this feels worse in the cold for some reason). I wondered if anyone has experienced similar with tamoxifen or if there’s a sleep supplement that’s helped. I’ve used valerian in the past but not sure how compatible it is. I imagine its early days in term of tamoxifens side effects but I’m hoping it’ll get more manageable. Thank you.
Hi I am not on Tamoxifen but I am on Letrozole and have been waking up at least 3 or 4 times every night sometimes more, ever since I started taking it. I haven't tried Valerian, but wanted to tell you that I asked a nutritionist about Chamomile tea and she said that was fine to take with Letrozole (obviously I'm not medically qualified to comment, but I think Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre have a website which does list herbs and interactions so you may find it helpful to search for that). I find it does help a bit. I think its probably due to lack of oestrogen rather than hot flushes (although they don't help, do they?). I hope you manage to get some relief (and sleep) soon. Hopefully others will be along soon with some helpful sleep suggestions. x
Hi, thanks for your reply. I’ve had a look at the site you mentioned, lots of information on there, thank you, Looks like valerian would be acceptable to use. I’m not a fan of chamomile hence why I don’t take it.
Hope you’re managing to sleep a bit better x
Hi
Just popping on to give another vote to the MSK website and to say that you might find the symptoms settle a bit over time - hopefully. If you get really fatigued, your GP may be willing to give you some short-term sleeping medication, given the circumstances, but fingers crossed the valerian works.

Hi Ronstar,
Thanks, that had crossed my mind. Oncologist reluctant to suggest sleeping tablets at the moment. I’ll give the valerian a go first. I’ve read your profile add see you were prescribed tamoxifen. May I ask if you experienced many side effects. I’m a bit all over the place emotionally at the moment. I expect this is entirely usual considering everything that’s happened over the last 4 months. I’m still coming to terms with it emotionally and physically and now find myself having to home school whilst feeling under par x
